Chargers outlast Raiders in a 5-setter

NICOLLET — Minnesota Valley Lutheran edged Nicollet 25-20, 18-25, 25-21, 17-25, 15-13 in a nail-biter of a volleyball match on Monday night. It was MVL’s regular-season finale.

MVL held the lead in the fifth set. There were four ties in the set before MVL established a 12-8 lead. Nicollet kept fighting and it got within two points.

Nicollet’s final tie was at 13-apiece. MVL was able to score the final two points and earn the victory.

MVL head coach Sara Gieseke called it a quality match from start to finish and both teams passed the ball well and made good hits when needed.

Nicollet head coach Judy Radke credited MVL with outhustling the Raiders, playing hard and wanting the win more that Nicollet did. Radke added her team made mistakes tonight that weren’t present over the past month of competition.

MVL was able to earn a first set win with a combination of good hits, aggressively pursuing the volleyball and a periodic mistake by Nicollet. It was a close set with neither team leading by more than a few points with three ties. MVL outscored Nicollet 5-0 to win the set.

Nicollet was up to the challenge as it took set two. Nicollet held a 16-9 advantage before MVL rallied close within four points. Nicollet earned the set-winning point when MVL knocked the ball out of bounds.

MVL opened the third set with a 7-0 run. The Raiders refused to quit as they were able to close within five points. MVL scored the final two points for a 2-1 set lead.

The Chargers grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the fourth set. Nicollet regained the lead and it had a 5-0 run. Nicollet prevailed won the fourth set.

MVL ends its regular season at 12-13. MVL awaits the section seedings to determine its next opponent. Nicollet (9-14, 4-3) will travel to Alden-Conger on Tuesday.
