Heartland Express will

operate on MLK Day

NEW ULM — Brown County Heartland Express will operate as normal for MLK day on Monday, Jan. 15. If you need to schedule a ride for that day, please make sure to call the Brown County Heartland Express office at 507-359-2717, or 800-707-2717 before 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 12.

Early Childhood Screening

NEW ULM — Early Childhood Screening in New Ulm is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 17 and Wednesday, Feb. 14.

Screening is available to any child who is between the ages of 3 years and Kindergarten. During screening children will participate in an evaluation of speech, language, fine and gross motor skills, behavioral, social and emotional development, hearing and vision, height and weight measurement, immunization recording, and a parental question and answer period.

Screening is free of charge and is required entrance into Eagle’s Preschool, Headstart, and Kindergarten. Early Childhood Screening will be held at the Washington Learning Center, 910 14th Street North. Appointments will be 90 minutes long, and we are unable to accommodate walk-ins. Civil War Round Table: Election of 1860

NEW ULM — The US Presidential election of 1860 saw five candidates from four parties on the national ballot for that office. Why so many candidates? What did they stand for? Come to the January 16 Minnesota Valley Civil War Round Table meeting and hear from local historian David Martinka about this critical and highly divisive election and the national events that lead up to it – and the resulting consequences. The meeting starts at 6:30PM at the New Ulm Public Library. Everyone is welcome and there is no charge.

Musicians wanted for

Municipal Band

NEW ULM — The New Ulm Municipal Band has been in existence for over 70 years, is made up of high school students, college students, farmers, teachers, doctors, attorneys, nurses, optometrists, and more with diversity not only of ages, but of ability levels, ranging from professional musicians to students with a only a few years of experience.

Under the direction of Don Jirak, the band, consisting of 50 to 60 musicians, shares its music at concerts in beautiful German Park at 7:00 on Wednesday nights in June and July as well as at a few other local events during the summer months. The Band plays show tunes, German music, marches and much more.

Tuesday evening rehearsals will be starting before long and the Band is always looking for players in several sections. Interested? Give Don Jirak a call at 507-794-7913 for more information.

St. Paul’s Pre-K Open House

NEW ULM — St. Paul’s Lutheran School is holding its Pre-K Open House on Tuesday, Jan. 16, from 2 to 6 p.m.

Parents can visit school, let their child “try out” the room and talk to Pre-K Director Heidi Meyer about the Pre-K program for 3- and 4-year-olds,
