NEW ULM -- The fate of a South Garden Street bike lane is on the City Council's agenda tonight.
The council will continue the public hearing on the 2017 utility, street and alley improvement project started on March 21. At its last meeting, two methods of striping Garden Street from Center to 8th South Street were presented. One striping option maintained the bike lane on the road. The other option replaced the lane with sharrows and restored on-street parking.
The council requested further input from residents living on the Garden Street and from the school district. The council was uncertain if the bike lane had enough use to justify restricting resident parking.
Armory land zoning
In other news, the council will consider approving the zoning of land for a new Minnesota Army National Guard Armory.
The request would rezone the land from Agriculture to a Service Business District.
The Planning Commission approved the zoning request last Thursday.
The land being rezoned is located south of Highway 14, west of the airport and east of the extension of Palmer Avenue and totals 31.24 acres.
The city plans to transfer 30 acres of the property to the Minnesota National Guard and retain 1.24 acres as a public right-of-way.
Easement
The council will consider a resolution granting the State of Minnesota a temporary easement on an area within Hans Joohs Park to reconstruct a portion of an existing storm sewer.
The work in the temporary easement is not expected to adversely impact the overall use of the property.
This reconstruction is part of MnDOT's project to reconstruct Highway 14/15 from North Broadway to the 14/15 intersection east of the Minnesota River in Nicollet County.
