Reader sounds off on plastic use

Dear Heloise: I agree that we need to be more conservative about throwing things away. However, if you get into the middle of the ocean and see those mountains of plastic and debris, most of this is from other countries such as China, Korea and India. If environmentalists want to do something productive, they need to go to these other nations that are polluting our Earth. I read that China is building many coal-fired power plants, while the Western world is either tearing them down or converting them to natural gas. Our cars are the cleanest burning vehicles in decades. Now we are ...

Walking with kids as they learn

Dear Heloise: I read your column in the Spokesman-Review in Spokane, Washington, every morning. I always enjoy the letters from readers and your responses; I especially like and have used many of your recipes. Your recipe on fudge was so easy, delectable and sinfully delicious! I am writing at your invitation to respond about the letter from a reader in Colorado regarding the state of education. I am a retired teacher and administrator with 32 years of service to wonderful young people and their families. That means each and every one of them, especially those who needed just a bit ...

Halloween reads from the children’s room

At the time of printing this article, it should be about a week away from Halloween. I loved the night as a child. I loved all the preparation that went into finding or making the perfect costume for trick-or-treating each year. As a young mother I think I had even more fun dressing my children for their school parties and a night of scouring the neighborhood looking for the house that gave out full size candy bars. I remember reading at least one spooky, or not so spooky, story before bed each night the week before Halloween. Here are some favorite picks for spooky, sometimes kooky, ...

Missing my family more and more

Dear Annie: I have a problem and am earnestly seeking your help. I am a widow and I have three children. Our family has always been a close one. However, I have encountered a dilemma I never thought I would experience. My daughter is a divorced mother of four grown children. In the past, she always made sure she visited. This has changed in the last few years. Now she seldom visits. I have seen her once this year. She only lives two hours from me. I have asked if I have done anything to offend her in any way, and she assures me I have not. I have helped her financially and have ...

Reusing pudding containers

Dear Heloise: The 4-ounce plastic containers from jello, pudding and applesauce are great to use as measuring cups. I keep canisters full of flour, sugar, cornmeal and coffee. They work well in an oatmeal carton and with powdered laundry products. They are also wonderful for holding paint for crafts. The rectangular plastic containers that shortening sticks come in are excellent for keeping small medicine or nail polish bottles neat and upright. -- Joyce Moore, via email FRAUD PREVENTION Dear Heloise: If you put your credit cards in an Altoids tin, it will prevent anyone from using ...
