Dear Annie: I was abused by my dad as a child, and my relationship with my mother was hell growing up. She was verbally and physically abusive toward me well into my 20s. She began a new relationship and things got worse. The situation between us got a little better when she became sick and I had to take care of her. My siblings didn’t pitch in, even though she treated them better than she did me. I have two daughters now, and she makes comments or critiques the way I parent. If I defend myself, she calls me disrespectful and says I’m hurting her feelings. I am very close to my ...

Laundry bag used a tool for soups

Dear Heloise: I used a small, new zippered laundry bag to make soup. For chicken soup, I put the bones, skin and fat in the bag, then put the whole thing in the soup pot. All the flavor is added to the soup without the mess. Just empty the bag and discard it. Giving grandkids the gift of quality time

Dear Annie: When my nephew was a toddler and his family visited, my mom (his grandmother) got big furniture boxes discarded from stores and made forts and tunnels in our large family room. She got down on the floor and played whatever character he chose her to be in this turf maze. She didn’t care if she played a dinosaur or the Lone Ranger. You could hear them giggling and laughing and enjoying play time that lasted for hours. She wasn’t concerned about her appearance or how others might see her as weird. She knew the impression she left on her grandchild and knew she had ...

Dear Heloise: I just wanted to give a friendly reminder to consider donating clean, gently used towels to your local veterinary clinics. I have also spotted a great towel sale and bought a bunch for a nearby clinic. Their need is incredible. Believe me, they will be so grateful. As a side note, some clinics may accept unused pet meds (still within their expiration date) as long as it is in the prescribing bottle. This goes for special shampoos as well. Please call first, though, as guidelines may vary. In some cities, there’s a specific group that accepts pet meds, and your local vet ...
