Struggling with my son who only uses me for money

Dear Annie: I left an extremely abusive marriage almost 30 years ago. The physical, verbal and mental abuse was so bad that I had to escape from the house one day when my husband was not home. I had a son with him that I had to leave behind. My son was 5 years old at the time. He would not have let me have him, so I made the decision, with the help of a family member, to leave with just the clothes I was wearing. Fast forward to the present, I recovered from that horrible episode in my life, completed my education and got a great job. I divorced him a year later. All these years, I had ...

Getting dogs to eat their food

Dear Heloise: I read your column in the Houston Chronicle every day. It has been a part of my morning ritual for many enjoyable years. Thank you. I am a dog person. We have two Labrador Retrievers. Every now and then, one of our dogs will go “off” of their food, but I have a simple solution that works every time: I put beef or chicken broth in a spray bottle. I just spritz a couple of sprays onto their dry food, and voila! They gobble it down! Stay well. -- Rob L., in Houston SEND A GREAT HINT TO: Heloise@Heloise.com DIGITAL DATING Dear Heloise: In this world of AI and ...

Keep the house cool this summer

neighbor gave us a great suggestion to lower our cooling bills this summer. He installed solar and sun screens on the windows that are on the sunny side of his house. These screens block the majority of the UV rays on the hot side of his home. So, we had a mobile screen company come to install them on ours. Oh, it’s so easy. And I’ll do anything to save money! I love your wonderful column. Keep it up! -- Sara, Orange County, California A GROUP CHAT FOR WIDOWS Dear Heloise: Older women who are living alone can benefit from forming small group chats through text message to ...

Rekindling Romance

Dear Annie: I’ve recently reconnected with a former co-worker with whom I had lost track of after her first husband committed suicide. She divorced her second husband when she found him in bed with another woman. She has an adult son from her second marriage. After reconnecting, we’ve been talking three or four nights a week and finally agreed to go out to dinner with one of her new co-workers and her husband. When we met the other couple at the restaurant, my former co-worker latched on to my hand as she introduced me. As we were walking to my truck to go home, she latched on to ...

Reader writes in about email scam

Dear Heloise: What you described in a recent column about an email scam happened to me three weeks ago. I made the mistake of believing what you described. The scammers did get access to my computer, and they scanned it. Aside from making my mortgage payment each month by phone call, I always do my banking in person. So, I was “told” that I had to withdraw $3,500 from the bank and deposit the money into a Bitcoin ATM machine that was located at a gas station in an unfriendly part of town. After being advised not to contact the bank and not to mention what the withdrawal was for, my ...
