NEW ULM — Tanner Backer scattered two hits through six inning and struck out 12 and Owen Castleman delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning as the New Ulm Eagles improved to 2-0 in the Big South Conference and 3-0 overall with a 4-2 win over St. Peter in a Big South Conference baseball game at Mueller Park Friday.
Backer walked two and hit one in getting the win.
Mitchell Hopp pitched the seventh inning in getting the save.
Isaiah Torbenson took the loss for the Saints. He went four innings and allowed all four Eagles runs.
Castleman had two of New Ulm’s four hits and had two RBIs.

Levi Wachal nad two hits for the Saints, including a triple.
“Tanner threw very well for us,” New Ulm head coach Jeff Ferrell said. “He kept the ball down — he located his pitches early — but you could tell towards the end he was getting tired, but he was able to get through it. He threw a real nice game.”
At one point, the junior left-hander struck out six straight Saints batters.
The Eagles, who only got four hits in the game, used them to produce all four runs.
In the bottom of the third, a single from Castleman and a bunt single off of the bat of Hunter Larson put New Ulm runners on first and third.
Castleman scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead before Larson scored on a Torbenson error on a pickoff attempt to get Larson at second. Larson came around to score on a second throwing error of the inning.
St. Peter cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth on a Wachal triple and a Lathe Bly groundout.
But the Eagles, who play at Belle Plaine on Tuesday, pushed two more runs across in the inning on a walk, a fielder’s choice and Castleman’s second hit of the game.
“We did a great job of small ball and putting the ball in play,” Ferrell said. “We made them make the play. We put runners in scoring position and we came through.”
The Saints added a run in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 4-2.
