NEW ULM — With a feels-like temperature in the low 30s on Tuesday, conditions weren’t ideal as New Ulm Cathedral took on Minnesota Valley Lutheran in a nonconference golf meet at the New Ulm Country Club. In the end, it was the Greyhounds who endured the elements the best, as Cathedral won both sides of the meet, with the boys winning 201-218 and the girls winning 235-256.

Cathedral’s Emma Hoffmann won the girls side of the meet with a score of 51, taking her second medal of the season.

“I think it’s a really great start for our team,” Hoffmann said. “Coming back last year from a few losses, but starting the season off strong is what matters and that we all have fun.”

Hoffmann said her short game was strong despite the cold weather and the wind.

“A few chip shots really helped me save my putts,” she said. “Then my iron shots, I hit them pretty clean and solid, hit them in the fairway and stayed consistent.”

Hoffmann put together five bogeys and four double bogeys on the day.

Cathedral’s Chloe Gilles was second for the girls with a 54, followed by MVL’s Annika Lowrey (58), Cathedral’s Cora Dagel (59) and MVL’s Eden Grubbs (65) and Eden Isaksson (65). MVL’s Scarlet Heldt placed seventh (68), Cathedral’s Megan Fingland and Peyton Weisbrich tied for eighth (71), and MVL’s Kara Hinrichsen came in 10th (73).

On the boys side of the meet, Cathedral’s Carter Wilson earned his first medal of the season, posting a 44. Wilson had parred Holes 1 and 8 and added six bogeys and one double bogey. Also for the boys, MVL’s Jacksen Gerdts led the Chargers with a score of 49, followed by MVL’s Philip Lukasek and Cathedral’s Jack Griebel (51), Cathedral’s Andrew Bentler (52) and Cathedral’s Jack South (54). Cathedral’s Carsten Haala placed seventh (55), Cathedral’s Cole Hoffman and MVL’s Colby Doering tied for eighth (56) and Cathedral’s Matthew Hendrickson placed 10th (58).

It was Cathedral’s second meet of the season, and the Greyhounds will be back on Thursday with a meet at Sleepy Eye United.

MVL was coming off of a meet in Janesville on Monday and continues its busy week with meets on Thursday against Madelia at St. James and Friday with a home meet against Le Sueur-Henderson at Mayflower Country Club.
