NEW ULM — It wasn’t Carson Schiller’s first time out on a golf course this year, but it certainly was a drastic change from his practice round at the Mayflower Golf Club in Fairfax Monday.
The Cedar Mountain senior battled wind and cool temperatures to finish as the boys medalist in Tuesday’s Tomahawk Division golf meet, leading the Cougars boys to a 193-210 win over New Ulm Cathedral at the New Ulm Country Club.
Temperatures in the low 40s on Tuesday afternoon in New Ulm and winds reached 23 miles per hour, and the weather was a big drop from the mid 70s the area saw on Monday.
Schiller persevered, however, turning in a solid nine-hole score of 43 to lead the Cougars to victory.
“I’ve gotten out a couple more times when we had some nicer days, traveled a little bit and got to some more courses, but with the conditions today, it being colder and windier, I was decently happy with my score,” Schiller said.

Schiller’s junior teammate Owen Dittbenner wasn’t far behind him with a second-place finish of 45, while Cathedral’s Carter Wilson and Jack Griebel tied for third with 49s. Cedar Mountain took up the next three spots on the leaderboard, with Hank Heiling finishing fifth (52), Blake Koerner taking sixth (53) and Thomas Dahmes taking seventh (54).
First-year golfer and New Ulm Eagles hockey player Carsten Haala ended up tying for eighth with teammate Jack South as the two each turned in a 56 along with Cedar Mountain’s Isaac Potter to round out the top 10.
Schiller had a tough first hole to overcome as he double-bogeyed it, but he finished his final eight holes with three pars and five bogeys.
“The first hole was tough, just got out here and it was pretty cold,” Schiller said. “Then there’s a par-3 kind of during the middle of my round, I think it was Hole 6, where it was just into the wind, which was tough, but otherwise I was playing pretty good today.”
Schiller ended up bogeying on Hole 6.

Schiller said another challenge was figuring out the green speeds with the course just recently opening for the season.
“I’d say [the greens] are actually a little bit faster than the Mayflower’s, but overall I think they’re not quite rolling true yet,” Schiller said. “They’re pretty slow for sure, so that was part of the challenge in the beginning of my round was trying to figure out the pace
Dittbenner had three pars, three bogeys and three double bogeys on the day.
Wilson had a tough start to his day with three consecutive double bogeys but answered with three consecutive bogeys, two pars and a bogey to end his day. Griebel finished with five bogeys and four double bogeys.
No Cedar Mountain girls were able to make the trip to New Ulm to give the Greyhounds any competition on the girls’ side of the meet, but five Cathedral girls took the course and were led by Emma Hoffmann, who carded a 53.
