Ferrell takes over as New Ulm baseball head coach

NEW ULM — Jeff Ferrell is the new head baseball coach for the New Ulm Eagles.

He replaces Mike Anderson, who resigned last month from that position because of a work conflict.

Ferrell’s baseball resume is impressive.

Ferrell was a head high school baseball coach in New Mexico for Albuquerque High School and Del Norte High School and was also an assistant baseball coach at Rio Grande High School, where he started his baseball coaching.

Ferrell then moved to Virginia and coached at George C. Marshall High School and then coached baseball at Langley High School in McLean, Virginia, before coaching at James W. Robinson Secondary School in Virginia, where he coached baseball and was also the Athletic Director for 10 years.

Getting the New Ulm Eagles head baseball coaching job is a return to a home area.

“I was born in Sleepy Eye and we lived in Franklin and Mountain Lake and I graduated high school from Delano and played two years in Willmar before going to the University of New Mexico,” Ferrell said.

An injury forced Ferrell to stop playing and got him into coaching.

Ferrell said that his wife is from Fairfax and he has family that lives in New Ulm.

“So when I retired from the education field, we found out that the cost of living is cheaper here than on the east coast, but that was not the main reason,” Ferrell said for his return to the midwest.

“We wanted to get back closer to family for both my wife’s family and my side of the family.”

When Ferrell got to New Ulm, he got on the New Ulm Legion Baseball Board and got back into coaching.

Last year he coached New Ulm VFW Silver, finishing the summer 19-7.

“I loved working with the kids and that had a big factor in why I applied for the New Ulm High School head baseball coaching job,” he said. “The kids were a joy to coach and be around and I wanted to continue that — I have been working with kids for over 35 years, so this is another opportunity to influence young people.”

Ferrell, who will be assisted by Paul Wyczawski and J.T. Hoffmann, said he is also looking at some other younger people who have just come into the area that want to get involved in coaching.

“And I need some people who have coached before and lived here to also get involved,” he said.

Ferrell said that this summer he will continue to coach baseball as he will be the head coach of the New Ulm Junior Legion.

Starting at $4.50/week.
