Area roundup: Nicollet, Cedar Mountain girls advance in 2A

Nicollet 55, MLA/C 54
ST. PETER — Fourth-seeded Nicollet held off fifth-seeded Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey on Thursday in a down-to-the-wire Section 2A Girls Basketball Tournament quarterfinals game, winning 55-54.
After Jazmyn Goettlicher sank the go-ahead free throws for Nicollet, she came up with a big block to end the game. MLA/C had a chance to tie it after getting the foul line with less than four seconds to play, but after missing both free throws and getting an offensive rebound, a 3 was put up but blocked by Goettlicher to end the game.
Goettlicher led Nicollet with 24 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Cheyenne Klockziem had a 13-point, 16-rebound double-double. Megan Soost hauled in 12 rebounds for Nicollet, while Aubrey Hulke had six rebounds.
Nicollet (21-7) will play top-seeded Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Monday at Gustavus Adolphus College.
Cedar Mountain 79, Sleepy Eye 49
ARLINGTON — Led by Aubrey Steffl’s triple-double, the No. 3-seeded Cedar Mountain Cougars took down sixth-seeded Sleepy Eye 79-49 on Thursday in a Section 2A Girls Basketball Tournament quarterfinals game at Sibley East High School.
Steffl had 19 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists and five steals in the win, while Kendra Lueck had 19 points and 12 rebounds and Kendra Erickson had 19 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Marlie Wildt also had 8 points and 11 rebounds for the Cougars.
Jaelynn Schauman led Sleepy Eye with 16 points, five rebounds and three steals, while Lexie Hoffmann had 14 points and five rebounds, Jace Schauman had 13 points and four rebounds and Taylor Berkner had 6 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. (These statistics were not reported by the time Thursday’s issue of The Journal went to print and added online after). Sleepy Eye ends its season 16-12 overall.
Cedar Mountain (23-5) takes on No. 2-seeded BOLD in the semifinals at 7:45 p.m. Monday at Gustavus Adolphus College.
BOLD 74, Springfield 27
ARLINGTON — No. 10-seeded Springfield fell to second-seeded BOLD 74-27 on Thursday in a Section 2A Girls Basketball Tournament quarterfinals game at Sibley East High School.
Springfield was led by Olivia Milbrath, who had 13 points, 10 rebounds and five steals, while Jada Reese had 6 points and three assists.
The Tigers finish their season 13-14 overall, while BOLD (23-5) plays Cedar Mountain in the semifinals Monday at Gustavus Adolphus College.
