Section individual wrestling roundup: Kampsen clinches state berth
Section 3A wrestling individuals from Springfield
SPRINGFIELD — Wabasso’s Mason Kampsen earned a state tournament berth on Saturday with a 3-1 day Saturday at the Section 3A Individual Wrestling Tournament at Springfield High School.
Kampsen (215) went 3-1 on the day and pinned Vincent Bray of Fulda/Murray County Central in 2:42 in a true second match to earn his state berth.
Several other area wrestlers earned top-5 finishes on the day, such as Wabasso’s KJ Beermann (107), Paxton Huhnerkoch (152), Zeke Olson (189), Zach Skoblik (133), Kullen Steen (114) and Lane Taylor (139).
Beermann finished fourth on the day, while Huhnerkoch finished fourth, Olson took fourth, Skoblik took fifth, Steen took fourth and Taylor took fourth.
Springfield’s Brett Jensen finished fifth at 121 also.
Section 4A wrestling individuals from Kimball
KIMBALL — Sibley East qualified three wrestlers to the state individual wrestling tourney this year after Saturday’s Section 3A Individual Wrestling Tournament at Kimball High School.
Julio Alejandro (133), Tanner Johnson (139) and Gianny Lopez (172) all finished second for the Wolverines Saturday to clinch a state berth. Alejandro was 2-1 with a true second fall in 3:32 over Kimball’s Karson Schmidt, while Johnson was 2-1 and pinned Olgivie’s Matt Fradette in 42 seconds in a true second match. Lopez was awarded the true second match victory by default after Olgivie’s Brody Magaard advanced to it and Lopez defeated him earlier in the day by an 8-1 decision.
