ST. PETER — While New Ulm wasted little time getting the one-up on Luverne Saturday night with Bodey Hagberg’s goal 16 seconds into the game, the Cardinals responded quickly and often, led by a five-goal performance from senior Maddux Domagala.

Domagala’s big night carried the top-seeded Cardinals past the fifth-seeded Eagles in a Section 3A Boys Hockey Tournament semifinals at Don Roberts Ice Rink.

Luverne (23-4) moves on to the section finals back at Don Roberts Ice Rink at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, while New Ulm ends its season 15-12.

Luverne outshot New Ulm 40-22.

With some fans still filing into the arena, Hagberg got a shot past Luverne goalie Gavin Hoven for a 1-0 New Ulm lead. That goal was assisted on by Mason Buegler and Carson Uecker. At 6:02 of the first, Luverne tied it on a goal from Jaxon Lais.

Late in the first, Benjamin Hartquist set up Jaxon Lais for a one-timer by the glove of Eagles goalie Blaine Arneson for a 2-1 lead. Arneson ended up with a stick save in the closing seconds of the period to keep it a 2-1 game after one.

Domagala scored his first goal of the night at 4:46 of the second unassisted to make it a 3-1 game.

With less than eight minutes to go in the second, Uecker broke loose all alone for a shot in close, but Hoven made a pad save to keep the score 3-1. Hagberg had another shot at the net with a backhand two minutes later, but Hoven made another big save.

While New Ulm killed off a power play late in the second, Luverne scored right after it ended on Domagala’s second goal of the night with less than two minutes left in the period for a 4-1 lead after two.

Uecker had another chance to score early in the third and his wrist shot ended up in the back of the net 16 seconds into the final period to have New Ulm down 4-2. That goal was assisted on by Hunter Larson and Hagberg.

Domagala completed his hat trick at 4:45 of the third and then scored his fourth goal a little more than two minutes later for a 6-2 Luverne lead. Domagala’s fifth goal came at 12:59 of the third and a power-play goal by Landyn Lais made it 8-2 in the closing minutes.

Hoven was pulled late in the third for senior goalie Xander Remme.
