Anderson joins 1,000-point club; Lewis shooting for 2,000
Some basketball history was made Tuesday night and more high school basketball history may be made Friday on the local scene.
Tuesday night, New Ulm Cathedral’s Eli Anderson became the 61st player to score 1,000 career points when he scored 29 for the Greyhounds in a road game at Cleveland for 1,003 career points currently.
Anderson, who became the 21st Greyhound to crack the 1,000-career point barrier, said that his 1,000th point came on a free throw.
“There was about 13 minutes left in the game,” he said. “It felt good — there was a lot of stuff leading up to that. It has always been my goal to score 1,000 points — it was something that I have been looking forward to. I was glad that I did it this year and I am having a pretty good season.”
Anderson, a junior averaging 29 points per game this season, said that he had a good first half in the game Tuesday and needed just a few points for his 1,000th.
“I was a little nervous, but I had a whole second half to get it,” he said.
Anderson said that coming up in Cathedral basketball he had three role models.
“One big one was Jevan Wilfahrt (1,783 career points), who I would go and shoot baskets with — we played a lot together on weekends, and the same with Jake Finstad (1,176 career points and my older brother Colin,” he said. “We were always in the gym.”
Anderson said that he is honored to be in the 1,000-point club.
“It is a big accomplishment,” he said.
The Greyhounds host Martin County West Friday to end their regular season.
A second bit of basketball history may happen Friday when New Ulm High School hosts Coon Rapids in a girls basketball game to end their regular season.
Brooklyn Lewis is 18 points away from a career 2,000 and would be just the fourth New Ulm area player to crack that barrier, joining Joey Batt (2,301), Colton Benson (2,207) and Galen Holzhueter (2,053).
HAUGEN HONORED WITH SELECTION
Callie Haugen, an eighth-grader at New Ulm Middle School and a member of the New Ulm High School girls hockey team, has been selected to play in the 2026 Northstar Invitational Hockey Showcase July 17-19 at the University of St. Thomas.
The showcase tournament is for the top group of 2030 graduates from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Manitoba, Canada.
Her head coach Derek Johnson, said that Haugen is an offensive-minded player.
“I had her playing center all year — she was my second-line center and she was number two on the team this year with 19 points,” Johnson said. “She had 10 goals and nine assists. She is very hockey smart for her age. She still has a little bit to learn at the high school level, but that will come with experience.”
Johnson said that Haugen is very “puck smart.”
“She knows what to do with the puck on her stick and she knows how to find her teammates,” he said. “She has the vision and now it is just gaining experience.”
Johnson said for Haugen’s potential that the sky is the limit for her.
“She has great hands already and she can keep sharpening those skills and that will put her at a high level,” Johnson said. “She has all the potential in the world to be one of the top girls in the state.”
