MLC’s Wenz wins UMAC women’s basketball POTW again

ST. PAUL – On Tuesday, Wilhelmina Wenz was voted the UMAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week (2/9-2/15) was one of four MLC student-athletes to be awarded UMAC Athlete of the Week, along with Adam Loberger, Gideon Heins, and R.J. Perry.

Despite MLC falling to Crown and Minnesota Morris this past week, Wenz showed up in each game. The sophomore finished with a double-double against Crown (11 points, 12 rebounds) to add to her breaking the MLC single-season record in rebounds (241). Wenz leads all UMAC players in rebounds per game (10.0) and scored a career-high 26 points against the Cougars on Saturday, knocking down six 3-pointers.

Wenz was previously voted UMAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week (1/26-2/1).

The Knights are in action against North Central on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. where they still have a chance at a spot in the UMAC Tournament with a win over the Rams.

Loberger NAMED

UMAC men’s

basketball POTW

Adam Loberger was announced as the UMAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week (2/9-2/15).

Loberger averaged 30.5 ppg and shot 52 percent from the floor in two conference games this past week. The sophomore also hit the 1,000-point milestone in a 77-66 win at Crown on Wednesday, scoring 35 points, while leading the Knights in assists (4) and steals (2).

Loberger put up 26 points in a loss to Minnesota Morris on Saturday and collected nine rebounds.

Loberger was previously named UMAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week back in the beginning of December this season.

The Knights will be in action again on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. against North Central. With a win, MLC would have a chance at a UMAC Tournament appearance.

PERRY EARNS UMAC MEN’S AOTW FOR

3RD TIME

R.J. Perry continued his stellar season for the MLC Indoor Track and Field team by being named the UMAC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week (2/9-2/15).

Perry placed first in the shot put (15.57 meters), beating out 30 throwers in the event. Perry also came in second in the weight throw (15.46 meters), which also had 30 throwers.

Perry was previously recognized with the achievement for the weeks of 1/12-1/18 and 1/19-1/25.

HEINS NAMED UMAC MEN’S TENNIS AOTW

Gideon Heins was named UMAC Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week (2/9-2/15) and was one of four MLC student-athletes (R.J. Perry, Adam Loberger, and Wilhelmina Wenz) to take home UMAC Athlete of the Week honors, as the freshman went undefeated (4-0) on Saturday, February 14, in a pair of matches against Ripon College and Crown College in Owatonna.

In the Knights’ 5-2 victory over Ripon, Heins and Isaiah Scharf won in No. 2 Doubles 6-3, while the freshman also won in No. 3 Singles 4-6, 6-1, 10 (10-5) against his Redhawks’ opponent.

In MLC’s 4-3 win over Crown in a nonconference matchup, Heins was instrumental in the Knights’ win, taking No. 2 Doubles along with Scharf again 6-2, while also winning in No. 3 Singles 6-1, 6-4.

Heins and the MLC men’s tennis team will be back on the court on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 3 p.m. against Lawrence in Appleton.
