New Ulm boys end regular season with shutout win
NEW ULM — Masyn Hauser scored a goal and added an assist as the New Ulm Eagles boys hockey team closed out their regular season with a 3-0 shutout of St. Paul in a nonconference game Saturday at the New Ulm Civic Center.
Brody Wendorff and Hunter Larson added goals, with Brody Nordby, Josh Forstner and Carson Uecker each getting a helper.
Eagles goaltender Colton Anderson stopped all 20 Scots shots in the game, including stopping shots on two St. Paul breakaways.
“This was a good solid team win,” Eagles head coach Ryan Neuman said as New Ulm ends their regular season at 14-11-0. “The other night [in a 6-3 road loss to Luverne] we played a solid 49 minutes against Luverne. But [today] we played a solid 51 minutes and sealed the game with an empty-netter.”
That empty-netter came by Larson, who scored his team-leading 27th goal of the year.
After a scoreless first 17 minutes, the Eagles put two pucks by Scots goaltender Emory Batt (35 saves on 38 shots) when Hauser picked up a rolling puck just outside the Scots blue line and broke in on Batt, beating him for a 1-0 lead at the 2:25 mark. Larson also got his 25th assist of the season on that goal.
Just over 11 minutes later, Wendorff made it 2-0 when he took a pass from Hauser and used a back-hand to find the back of the net.
“Hauser and Wendorff getting our two goals before that empty-netter was nice,” Neuman said. “We are getting goals from guys that maybe have not scored as much for us this season — this was Wendorff’s first varsity goal in his third varsity game, so he stepped up nicely for us. And Hauser has been playing better the last three games.
“It has been a team mentality and we are getting them to buy into it with what we have done with line combinations and mixing and matching guys, but I think that we have found something here.”
And Neuman also praised the play of Anderson in the nets.
“We did a good job of keeping guys boxed out and not giving second chances on him,” Neuman said. “He made saves that he had to make for us — and he did a good job in the nets.”
The Eagles now await the section tournament.
“You always want to go into playoffs on a positive note and that is what we need going forward,” Neuman said.
If the Eagles are seeded fourth, they would host a first-round playoff game, with a five seed sending them on the road for postseason.
“It does not matter where we are seeded,” said Nordby. “We will compete with anyone and we can beat anyone in the section — we have not played our best game yet. Anyone of the top five seeds can win it.”
