Olivia Downs led the Scarlets (12-12) with 22 points.

Lewis also had nine rebounds and eight steals with Brustad adding 13 rebounds and Joyce seven boards.

The Eagles, who host Central on Monday, trailed the Scarlets 68-67 before Leah Brustad canned a jumper for a 69-68 New Ulm lead with 30 seconds left and two free throws from Lewis had New Ulm holding a 71-68 lead with 14 seconds left in the game

But Downs hit a 3 at the buzzer setting up the extra session.

Joyce’s basket gave New Ulm a 73-71 lead before West’s Allison Carter knotted the game at 73-73.

After a lose ball gave the Eagles the ball with eight seconds left, head coach Mitch Lewis called a timeout.

“I had a bunch of plays drawn up and ready to go,” he said “We were looking for the cut to the ball and Maggie threw a great pass deep [to Brooklyn] and luckily it went in.”

But is was a game where twice the Eagles saw double-digit leads shrink

In the first half, the Eagles used an 11-0 run to build a 19-8 lead,

Two baskets from Riley Wilson, a Brustad bucket inside and a 3 from Joyce had the Eagles with an 11-point lead.

Two baskets from Lewis had New Ulm with a comfortable 23-10 cushion.

But West closed out the first half on a 25-13 run to pull to within 36-35at halftime.

“We turned the ball over a lot and our rebounding was not very good,”coach Lewis said. “I did think that we did a nice job offensively and defensively, [but] we turned the ball over and we did not box out.”

New Ulm came out to start the second half and used a 23-6 spurt for a 59-41 lead.

3s from Brustad, Lewis and Joyce and a Brustad basket off of a Scarlets turnover had the Eagles with an 18-point lead

But West came back and cut the lead to 65-60 on a Downs basket and held a 68-67 lead late in the game.

“Give credit to West,” coach Lewis said “But we stuck together — that was the big thing — we did not get down on ourselves,”

Coach Lewis said that it was a big section win.

“We should be the three seed and host Hutchinson in the playoffs,” he said.
