NEW ULM — Despite the New Ulm Cathedral Greyhounds taking the first lead in Thursday’s Tomahawk-Valley Conference crossover girls basketball game against Nicollet, that was the only time the Raiders trailed.

The Raiders went on a 15-0 run after that first Cathedral bucket and continued to roll as they downed the Greyhounds 66-52.

Nicollet had four players in double figures, led by Cheyenne Klockziem’s 16 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks. Jazmyn Goettlicher added 14 points and six assists, while Zoie Rengstorf had 11 points, five assists and four steals and Chloe Kachelmeier had 10 points.

The Raiders’ lone senior Kamryn Truebenbach also got in on the fun with a trio of 3-pointers to finish with 9 points.

“I felt a little different, I just felt that they’d go in tonight,” Truebenbach said. “So, I just kept shooting. And then when I felt like they wouldn’t go in, I just kind of shared the ball and the other people scored.”

Shay Wilfahrt, who passed Steph Klaviter for the Cathedral career rebounding record this past Saturday against Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart, opened the game by scoring on a hook shot inside and finished with 10 points. Jayde Altermatt ended up leading the Greyhounds with 12 points, while Brynn Wilfahrt finished with 11 points.

After Shay Wilfahrt’s bucket, Klockziem scored inside on the other end to kick off a 15-0 Raiders run that was aided by their aggressive full-court press. Goettlicher canned a 3 to continue the run, while Klockziem added another bucket, Goettlicher had a pair of free throws and Truebenbach sank her first 3 of the evening to force a Cathedral timeout with 13:50 left in the half.

After the timeout, Truebenbach hit another 3 to put the Raiders up 15-2 before the Greyhounds ended the run with an and-one by Shay Wilfahrt.

After a 3 by Altermatt had Cathedral down 21-11, the Raiders got another long run, this time a 13-0 one, to lead 33-11. The run started when Goettlicher found Klockziem inside for 2 and was followed up with a long jumper from Kachelmeier. Klockziem scored inside again, while Goettlicher scoed on a layup, Rengstorf knocked down a 3 and Kachelmeier hit another long jumper from the corner for a 33-11 lead.

The Raiders ended up leading 40-16 at halftime.

After a 3 by Thea Paszkiewicz had the Greyhounds down 47-22, Truebenbach hit her third 3 of the game to counter that before Goettlicher scored on a layup for a 52-22 Nicollet lead.

“It’s really fun to be a team that works together and we move the ball,” Truebenbach said. “When we all work together and share the ball and all score, it’s [fun].”

The Raiders’ largest lead of the night was 55-24 after Kachelmeier knocked down another long 2.

With both teams emptying their benches late, the Greyhounds finished the game with a 10-0 run that started with a steal for a layup by Brynn Wilfahrt. Brynn Wilfahrt had 7 of those points in the run, while Evelyn Mack had a bucket and Maddy Hazuka added a free throw. Taylor Lamecker also had 6 points in the second half off the bench for the Greyhounds.

The Raiders (19-6) won their 12th game in a row with Thursday’s win and now prepare for the Tomahawk-Valley Conference championship game at 7 p.m. Tuesday when they host the No. 4-ranked Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Knights (23-1).

“I’m excited,” Truebenbach said. “I think it’ll be a pretty good game. They have some pretty good players, but I think we can do it.”

Cathedral (10-14) hosts Madelia on Friday night.

Starting at $4.50/week.
