Eagles swarmed by Tigers in loss

NEW ULM — When Brooklyn Lewis turned a Marshall turnover into a basket, it cut the Tigers’ lead to 26-19 midway through the first half.

But that was the closest the Eagles got the rest of the game.

Marshall followed up that basket with a 19-0 run en route to a 85-45 win over the Eagles Thursday night in a Big South Conference girls basketball game.

Avery Schneekloth led Marshall (17-3, 9-0) with 18 points. Reese Drake added 16, with Danielle Nubile ending with 14 and Madilyn Panka 13.

Brooklyn Lewis led New Ulm (16-6, 9-2) with 18 points.

Lewis now has 1,859 career points — fourth in the City of New Ulm career scoring history behind Minnesota Valley Lutheran’s Galen Holzhueter (2,053), New Ulm High School’s Colton Benson (2,207) and New Ulm High School’s Joey Batt career-leading mark of 2,301.

“Marshall is a very tough team — they are very well-coached and very athletic,” New Ulm head coach Mitch Lewis said. “We showed we could play with them for a little bit and then we just ran out of gas. They can go 10 players deep and we go one or two deep.”

The Eagles had some life when they trailed by just 7 points at 26-19 before the Tigers’ press started to give New Ulm troubles.

“Their press is intense and I felt that we did a very nice of breaking their press — they pulled if off for a possession or two and I was proud of our girls for that,” coach Lewis said. “But we were not getting the stops on defense.”

And it was a half that despite making only 3 of 14 shots from beyond the arc, the Tigers had a 21-point lead.

Marshall increased its lead to 67-33 led by two 3s from Nubile, with Avery Fahl and Panka each connecting on 3s.

“We left their shooters open — we helped on the drive a little too much — and their shooters got open looks,” coach Lewis said. “That is what happens against a team like that.”

Both of the Eagles’ two losses in conference play this season came at the hands of the Tigers and both were double-digit losses.

Coach Lewis said that when the Eagles got down by double digits that he wanted the girls to go back to the basics.

“Lets run our offense and prepare for Friday’s game at Delano,” he said. “It gets to a point where you have to work on it like a practice. Delano is tough, strong and physical — they put a lot of pressure on you.”
