NEW ULM — In the first half of their game against New Ulm Cathedral, the Wabasso Rabbits had already placed four players in double figures and had a 60-32 lead over the Greyhounds.

That balanced scoring led to a dominating 97-54 win over the Greyhounds in a Tomahawk Division boys basketball game Saturday.

Brayden Guetter and Caden Frericks each had 22 points to lead the Rabbits. Frericks also had 12 rebounds.

Drew Kemp added 16 points and Tavyn Larson had 14 points as Wabasso improved to 17-2 overall and 12-1 in conference play.

Eli Anderson led the Greyhounds (6-12, 4-8) with 38 points.

“Wabasso is a very good team,” Cathedral head coach Zach Kaiser said. “They have a lot of size at every position — they shoot very well and when you play them it is almost picking how do we want to get beat tonight. You have to make sacrifices — do you want to get beat on the post and give up 3-point shots, which they hit at a high rate, or do you want to protect the 3 and give up the post points. Wabasso has good guards and good post players and they shoot really well.”

Wabasso took off on a 17-4 lead before Anderson and Ryler Collins hit back-to-back 3s to cut the lead to 17-10.

But the Rabbits increased their lead to 25-10 and then 39-16 on a conventional three-point play from Frericks.

It also saw five different Wabasso players score points in that span.

“Everybody played well — they did their job,” Wabasso head coach Scott Leopold said. “That is how we want to play — we need contributions from everybody, otherwise it does not work. We want equal contributions from everybody and it keeps us moving.”

While the Rabbits had four players in double figures in that first half with Kemp (16), Guetter (15), Frericks (15) and Larson (14), Cathedral’s Anderson had 21 of the Greyhounds 31 points and he ended up scoring 33 of the first 43 points.

“Ryler started out well — he hit his first couple of shots,” Kaiser said. “It is nice to see him get his confidence. But right now we need guys who are willing to score — they are capable, but they need to be willing to step up.

“I am still confident that someone else is going to have a big game for us this season. Quinten [Forst] has had a couple of big games for us this season.”

Wabasso’s Joshua Timm’s basket gave the Rabbits an 81-43 lead with nine minutes left in the game.
