NICOLLET — New Ulm Area started off a nonconference prep wrestling match against Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial Area with three consecutive pins and never looked back, winning 51-12 on Tuesday.

Chase Wilson, Regan Johnson and Brayden Miller all pinned their opponents at 107, 114 and 121, respectively, all in the first period, for an 18-0 lead.

“Coach Nate [Meixel], and I, we just put our kids out there,” NUA head coach Kevin Briggs said. “The purpose of this dual was to get matchups for sections, so I was thankful we both did that. A lot of good matches in there, especially at [1]27, [1]39 and [1]60, and that’s why we came. Those allowed us to get better.”

Alex Portner, ranked eighth in the state at 127 for NUA, matched up next with Ryder Antony, who is ranked seventh in the state. Both made strong moves in the first period but were unable to come away with a takedown, taking the match to the second period. Portner earned an escape and then punished a shot from Ryder Antony to earn a takedown and a 4-0 lead. Ryder Antony escaped, then escaped again to start the third period, but Portner scored another takedown for a 7-2 lead. Ryder Antony escaped again and took another shot late, but was unable to finish the takedown as Portner earned the 7-3 decision.

Kane Johnson followed that up with a 20-4 technical fall over Rowen Antony at 133, then Elijah Rieser that with four takedowns in a 13-4 major decision over Brody Herbst at 139 and a 30-0 NUA lead.
