NEW ULM — New Ulm hit nine 3-pointers in Tuesday’s Big South Conference girls basketball win over Belle Plaine, and the Eagles’ leading scorer Brooklyn Lewis didn’t even need to attempt one.
That was the type of game it was for the Eagles as they soared past the Tigers 88-53.
Brooklyn Lewis ended up with a game-high 27 points while dishing out seven assists and grabbing six rebounds, while Maggie Joyce had 22 points. The Eagles (12-4, 8-1) also saw Leah Brustad finish with 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while Riley Wilson had 11 points and five rebounds.
Maggie Joyce had four 3s for the Eagles, while Leah Brustad hit three. Brooklyn Lewis was 11 of 11 from the foul line.
“Leah was hot last game we had in St. Peter, she hit a bunch of 3s and it carried right over into this game,” Eagles head coach Mitch Lewis said. “She stayed hot. Maggie hit a bunch of 3s, it was nice to see Riley Wilson hit some shots tonight and get her moving. To get some production out of her would be huge coming down the stretch here. And the zones are tough when Brooklyn’s on the top, you just don’t get a whole lot of shots on the top, but we’ve got other people open, she distributed the ball well and it works.”

The Tigers (8-8, 3-4) were led by Emma Martin, who had 19 points.
The Eagles started hot from beyond the arc with 3s from Leah Brustad and Wilson, but the Tigers answered with a bucket from Ava Michaelis, an and-one from Adriane Nelson and a 3 from Martin to jump ahead 8-6 and force coach Lewis to burn a timeout with 14:39 left in the half.
“We just kind of talked about, ‘Are we ready to play now?'” coach Lewis said. “We came in kind of slow, sluggish, and it was like, ‘OK, let’s go now. It’s time to play, time to get after it.’ And they did. They responded to that and played harder after that.”
Maggie Joyce sank a 3 out of the timeout to give the Eagles the lead again. Kylie Linquist scored inside on the other end to give Belle Plaine the lead back, but that was the last time the Tigers ended up having the lead.
A putback bucket by Wilson ignited a 10-0 run that saw 3s from Joyce and Leah Brustad, both assisted on by Brooklyn Lewis, giving the Eagles a 19-10 lead. With eight minutes left in the half, the Eagles went on another run, this time a 13-0 run that ended with a 3 by Joyce for a 38-17 Eagles lead.

The Eagles ended up leading 45-26 at halftime.
Coach Lewis was able to get every player he could into the game at some point during the game, such as senior Lexie Goff, who finished with 6 points off the bench.
After exchanging buckets with Belle Plaine through the first several minutes of the second half, the Eagles got hot again, starting with a 3 from Maggie Joyce, who followed that with a fast-break layup. Brooklyn Lewis had a fast-break layup of her own to keep the run going, while Keira Sullivan came off the bench and had an assist to Wilson to cap off a 9-0 run for a 70-41 New Ulm lead.
Belle Plaine cut its deficit back down to 71-50, but Maggie Joyce was able to recover a loose ball in the backcourt and dish it to Leah Brustad for a corner 3 that started another 9-0 New Ulm run. Goff finished the run with a bucket inside for an 80-50 lead.
Moments later, the Eagles got their largest lead of the night and final score following a bucket by Goff, a 3 by Aubrey Brustad and a buzzer-beating layup by Sullivan.
New Ulm is at Jordan on Thursday before heading to Worthington Friday in what is expected to be senior forward Betsy Joyce’s return to the court following an ACL surgery last year.
“She’s definitely going to have to work herself in,” coach Lewis said of Betsy Joyce. “We can’t just bring her in, playing a full game. She’s probably get seven, eight minutes a half, maybe, see how it goes and then gradually start building it up until she’s 100% comfortable. But she had her last appointment today. And her injured leg is actually stronger than her other leg they told us.”
