Area roundup: NUA wins Highwater Ethanol Invite

NUA takes 1st in Lamberton

LAMBERTON — The New Ulm Area wrestling team took first at the Highwater Ethanol Invite on Frdiay at Red Rock Central, taking first out of eight teams with 233 points.

Canby took second with 139.5 points.

NUA was led by Kane Johnson (133), Elijah Rieser (139) Tegan Kral (145) and Braxton Kiecker (152), who all took first in their respective weight classes. Kane Johnson had a bye, a fall and a major decision on the day, while Rieser had a bye and two tech falls, Kral had two falls and a major decision and Kiecker had a bye, a fall and a decision.

NUA also had four second-place finishers in Chase Wilson (107), Kaden Fortwengler (127), Candon Briggs (160) and Tilken Fruhwirth (215), while Regan Johnson (114), Brayden Miller, Spencer Drill (152) and Dirk Haynes (172) each took third.

NUA hosts a triangular against New London-Spicer and Owatonna at noon on Saturday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

GFW 78, Lester Prairie 69

LESTER PRAIRIE — Behind Cole Jacobson’s 37 points, Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop downed Lester Prairie 78-69 in a Tomahawk Division boys basketball game Friday night.

Also for GFW, Kaden Rieke added 15 points, while Matthew Lee had 9 points and Eric Herrera added 7.

GFW (9-6, 6-2) hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s in a Tomahawk game Monday night.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Lester Prairie 53, GFW 46

WINTHROP — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop fell to Lester Prairie 53-46 on Friday night in a Tomahawk Division girls basketball game.

Keyden Buboltz led the way for Firebirds in the loss with 14 points, while Kinley Bruns had 10 points and Kelby Bruns had 7 points.

GFW (2-14, 1-10) is at Mankato Loyola for a 7 p.m. game Monday.

BOYS HOCKEY

SWC/R 4, New Ulm 2

CHASKA — New Ulm fell to a Southwest Christian/Richfield comeback on Friday night as SWC/R scored three goals consecutively to defeat the Eagles 4-2 in a nonconference boys hockey game.

Masyn Hauser scored the first goal for New Ulm at 5:26 of the first on an assist by Carsten Haala, while the Eagles’ second goal came 8 seconds into the second on assists by Trevan Thordson and Melvin Sellner to give New Ulm a 2-1 lead. SWC/R scored two goals after that in the second to take the lead and added an insurance goal in the third.

Blaine Arneson took the loss in net for New Ulm, picking up 30 saves.
