Chargers turning the corner
Minnesota Valley Lutheran head boys basketball coach Kory Kettner said after his team’s 73-44 road win over St. Clair Tuesday that he feels that his team has started to turn the corner.
“We are figuring some things out on both sides of the ball,” he said after his Chargers improved to 10-5 on the season. “Defensively we are figuring out what it takes to get stops and then to finish the possession with a rebound — we finally have guys who are going to get rebounds. And we are starting to get guys to play with our feet more and play inside out and taking care of the lane defensively.”
Kettner said that right now he has more concern about his defense.
“The past couple of games we have been a pretty heavy zone team — before that we were primarily a man-to-man defense,” he said. “But the guys are buying in to what it takes to compete while playing a zone (defense)- and our zone is not a passive one by any means — we are trying to figure out on the fly — and we are much better last night than we were against Waseca. We are all right against Waseca without ever really practicing it.”
Kettner said that changing from a man-to-man defense to a zone still carries some man defense to it.
“A good zone has a lot of man-to-man principles to it,” he said. “The one thing that we have to do in our zone is we have to be matching up on the ball for sure and we need to be aware of where the shooters are on the court at all times. We have done a pretty good job of that so far. There are some weak spots that we have to take care of yet but right now for as little as we have practiced and I am pretty pleased with how it has worked out.”
MVL is scheduled to Le Sueur-Henderson on Friday.
