NEW ULM — The Martin Luther College Knights’ comeback — and late, game-tying bucket by Anna Kieselhorst — ended up falling short in the end Wednesday courtesy of the quick hands of Bethany Lutheran College’s Sheridan Kennedy.
Kennedy’s putback bucket in the paint with just seconds left lifted the Vikings to a 60-58 win over the Knights in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball game.
Morgan Hulke, a 2025 New Ulm High School grad, looked good in her return to New Ulm as a Viking as she finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. She was also 4 of 6 from beyond the arc.
With MLC needing to foul late to get the ball back, Hulke hit on the second of a pair of bonus free throws, prompting a timeout with the Vikings up 58-55.
Out of the timeout, Kieselhorst was quick to drain a 3 and tie the game up with 8 seconds to play. After another break in the action, the Vikings had Amelia Walker drive to the paint in attempts to score on a layup or draw a foul. Her shot was off, however, and gathered in traffic by Sheridan, who put up a quick shot in the lane that dropped in for a 60-58 lead. It was only the second basket in the game by Sheridan, but it couldn’t have been any more important.

With less than two seconds to play, the Knights were unable to get off a long 3-point attempt by Feidt in time, ending the game.
Megan Wellner ended up leading the Vikings with 15 points and five rebounds, while Juliana Ewald had 9 points and three assists and Kennadi Arndt had 8 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Kieselhorst led the Knights with 19 points, seven rebounds and four steals, while Wilhelmina Wenz had 15 points and 15 rebounds and Ava Stein had 10 points.
MLC led 25-24 at the half after Ella Schmidt had a layup in the final 30 seconds of the second quarter. BLC ended up taking the lead back in the third quarter and growing it to 46-34 after Hulke hit back-to-back 3s.
The Knights trailed by as much as 12 in the fourth quarter but stayed with it and chipped away at the deficit, getting it down to 57-52 following a jumper from Kieselhorst and a free throw from Stein. Another free throw by Ella Walz and a tip-in by Lydia Feidt had MLC down 57-55 with 27 seconds left.
BLC finished the game shooting 39.3% from the floor, while MLC shot 36.4%. BLC had the slight edge on the boards with 32 rebounds to MLC’s 30.
MLC (9-9, 2-3) is at North Central University in Minneapolis next on Wednesday, while BLC (7-10, 4-0) hosts NCU this coming Saturday.
