NEW ULM — In Saturday night’s Big South Conference boys hockey game against Redwood Valley, the New Ulm Eagles had as many goals in the game as the Cardinals had shots on goal.
New Ulm fired 48 shots on goal and scored nine times as the Eagles blanked Redwood Valley 9-0 at the New Ulm Civic Center.
Hunter Larson recorded a hat trick with Carson Uecker adding two goals.
Jaxon Saenz, Masyn Hauser, Carsten Haala and Brody Hagberg each adding a goal
Hagberg also had three assists with Josh Forstner adding two helpers.
Larson, Saenz, Mason Buegler, Haala, Uecker and Trevan Thordson each had an assist.
New Ulm head coach Ryan Neuman said that he was happy with the way his team played overall in the game
“We talked about how we wanted to move the puck in the game” he said. “And we did a good job of controlling the puck. We would have liked to see a few more passes on a couple of opportunities from some guys but overall we did what we had to do.”
The Eagles scored four times in the first 17 minutes on goals from Saenz, Hauser, Uecker and Larson before pushing three more by Redwood Valley goaltender Brecken Erickson in the second period.
Haala, Larson and Uecker did the damage in the second period that saw the Eagles having more goals (seven) that the Cardinals had shot on net with six.
Hagberg’s short-handed goal early in the third period made it 8-0 before Larson got his hat trick with just over three minutes to go in the game.
“We were happy with the win on Hockey Day,” Neuman said as the members of the 1975 team — the first at New Ulm High School — were awarded the Tom Macho Award.
