NEW ULM — Isabelle Forstner and Callie Haugen — both eighth-graders — each scored two goals as the New Ulm Eagles blanked Worthington 5-0 Thursday night at the New Ulm Civic Center.

Tristyn Wolner added the other goal for the Eagles who improved to 2-2 in conference game and 4-11 overall.

New Ulm goaltender Ava Schmid stopped all 11 Trojans shots as the Eagles outshot Worthington 47-11 in the game.

“We played a good, solid game,” New Ulm head coach Derek Johnson said. “We did not do anything to flashy but they played their positions well — passed the puck well — we got lots of shots. And as the game went on, we were able to put some pucks in the back of the net.”

The Eagles, who host Albert Lea Saturday at 2 p.m. at the New Ulm Civic Center, got on the board in the second period when Forstner scored two unassisted goals seven minutes apart for a 2-0 lead.

“She did get a goal earlier in the year and she has a few assists,” Johnson said about Forstner. “But this was her first multi-point game of the year.”

New Ulm carried that 2-0 lead into the third period before Haugen — who had a hat trick Tuesday at South Central — added two more goals for a 4-0 lead. Her first goal of the game came off an assist from Brecklyn Harazin, while her second was an unassisted score.

“She has been on a scoring streak,” Johnson said about Haugen. “She has been finding the back of the net.

Johnson said that both eighth-graders have played solid all season.

“They have been between my first and second lines all year long and have been developing fantastically,” Johnson said.

Wolner’s goal at the 8:22 mark of the third period put a bow on the Eagles’ win.

“She was in a little bit of a drought so it was good to see her get a goal — she has been working very hard,” Johnson said about the senior forward.

Johnson and the Eagles now turn to their attention to a tough Albert Lea team for Hockey Day.

“We have been playing some top ten teams in Class A this year, so hopefully we will be ready for them,” Johnson said.
