NEW ULM — The Waseca Bluejays scored four unanswered goals to erase a 2-1 first period lead and went on to a 6-4 win over New Ulm in a Big South Conference boys hockey game at the New Ulm Civic Center.

Griffin Storey had two goals for the 20th ranked team in Class A as they improved to 4-0 in conference play and 7-4-1 overall.

Jaxon Saenz, Carsten Haala, Hunter Larson and Melvin Sellner had goals for the Eagles, who fell to 1-3 in conference action and 5-6 overall.

Mason Buegler had two assists. with Bobby Rewitzer, Carson Uecker, Brody Nordby and Larson each adding helpers.

Eagles goalie Blaine Arneson stopped 30 of 36 Waseca shots, while Bluejays netminder Josiah Schmidtke recorded 30 saves on 34 New Ulm shots.

For the Eagles and head coach Ryan Neuman, it was a case of doing some better things in the first 17 minutes and a case of puck luck that went the Bluejays way.

“We gave up some goals in that second period,” Neuman said. “We cleared a puck that hit linesman that went back in and they scored a goal off of that and another when we back checked hard and they did a spin-a-rama and they scored another goal.”

New Ulm took a 1-0 lead when Jaxon Saenz took a perfect pass from Hunter Larson for a 1-0 lead.

The Bluejays knotted the score just over five minutes later on a goal from August Hansen.

But Carsten Haala rebounded a Bobby Rewitzer shot at the 13:30 mark for a 2-1 lead.

In the second period, the speed of the Bluejays hurt New Ulm as they scored three goals to erase a 2-1 deficit and take a 4-2 lead.

“Their speed hurt us when we got caught — if we made a bad pinch or forget that they are behind you,” Neuman said. “Offensively they are good and we knew that we had to expose them on the defensive side — that is where they struggle and again that is where we do good things. Our fore check as good -we bottled them up in the neutral zone as much as we could too but they are a good hockey team.”

Waseca increased their lead to 5-2 at the 10:22 mark of the third period when they used some of that speed when Cash Lynch broke in on Arneson all alone and scored for a 5-2 lead.

Hunter Larson’s team-leading 10th goal of the season cut the lead to 5-3 with Nordby getting the lone assist at the 10:22 mark.

But any hope of an Eagles comeback went away when Otto Schoenrock scored just over a minute later to give thee Bluejays a 6-3 lead.

The Eagles pulled Arneson for an extra attacker with 1:33 left in the game and a Sellner goal cut the lead to 6-4 with just over a minute left in the game.

“Give credit to our guys — they did not quit, kept going and kept battling,” Neuman said.

The Eagles travel to Worthington Thursday before hosting Redwood Valley Saturday night at 7 p.m. for Hockey Day.

Starting at $4.50/week.
