Area roundup: Mathiowetz scores 40 in St. Mary’s win

GIRLS BASKETBALL

St. Mary’s 87, GFW 24

WINTHROP — Morgan Mathiowetz dropped 40 points for Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Monday night in an 87-24 win over Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in a Tomahawk Division girls basketball game.

Mathiowetz also had four rebounds and six steals in the win, while Olivia Schieffert added 25 points, seven rebounds and eight steals. Natalie Fischer added 5 points and six assists for the Knights, while Brynne Ibberson had 4 points and Audra Hoffmann had 4 points, three assists and two steals.

GFW was led by Keyden Buboltz’s 7 points, while Lauren Schafer had 6 points and Kinley Bruns added 4 points.

St. Mary’s (10-0, 6-0) is at Lester Prairie on Tuesday night for a Tomahawk game, while GFW (2-7, 1-4) hosts Sleepy Eye on Tuesday night in another Tomahawk game.

New Ulm 66,

Mankato East 18

MANKATO — New Ulm cruised by Mankato East 66-18 in a nonconference girls basketball game on Monday.

Brooklyn Lewis had 23 points and eight steals for the Eagles, while Maggie Joyce had 12 points and six assists. Jordan Boettger had 9 points and three assists, while Leah Brustad had 8 points and nine rebounds.

New Ulm (8-2) plays at Willmar on Thursday.

Cedar Mountain 66,

Nicollet 64

MORGAN — The Cedar Mountain Cougars eked out a 66-64 win over the Nicollet Raiders on Monday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference crossover girls basketball game.

Kendra Erickson led the Cougars with 26 points, nine rebounds, four steals and three assists, while Aubrey Steffl had 18 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals. Kendra Lueck added 13 points for the Cougars.

Nicollet was led by Jazmyn Goettlicher’s 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while Zoie Rengstorf had 18 points and five assists and Cheyenne Klockziem had 15 points. Chloe Kachelmeier had 5 points and Megan Soost added 4 points.

Nicollet (6-5) hosts Mankato Loyola on Saturday at 11:15 a.m. in a Valley Division game. Cedar Mountain hosts New Ulm Cathedral in Tomahawk action Tuesday night.

Springfield 67, BLHS 62

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield defeated Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 67-62 in a Tomahawk Division girls basketball game on Monday.

Olivia Milbrath led the Tigers with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Jada Reese had 17 points and six rebounds. Kendall Krueger put up 15 points and 15 rebounds, and Makay Winkelmann added 10 points and five rebounds.

No statistics were reported for BLHS.

Springfield (6-4, 5-2) plays at Sleepy Eye on Thursday, while BLHS (4-3, 1-3) plays at Wabasso on Tuesday.

Wabasso 81, TMB 66

TRACY — Wabasso rolled Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 81-66 in a nonconference girls basketball game on Monday.

Kenley Guetter led the Rabbits with 21 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists and five steals, while Sara Carlson had 15 points, six rebounds and four assists. Elizabeth Morin had 15 points and three rebounds. Ava Samyn added 14 points and eight rebounds.

Wabasso (5-7) hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Tuesday.

MCW 49, Sleepy Eye 46

SLEEPY EYE — Martin County West downed Sleepy Eye 49-46 in a nonconference girls basketball game on Monday.

Jaelynn Schauman led the Indians with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Taylor Berkner had 13 points, four rebounds and three steals. Alexis Hoffmann added 10 points.

Sleepy Eye (7-6) plays at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in Gibbon on Tuesday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Wabasso 80, Minneota 40

WABASSO — Wabasso stayed undefeated with an 80-40 win over Minneota Monday in a nonconference boys basketball game.

Cole Frericks led the Rabbits with 22 points, 18 rebounds and three steals, while Drew Kemp had 21 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Brayden Guetter had 19 points, six rebounds, 10 assists and three steals.

Wabasso (9-0) hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Tuesday.

Springfield 104, BLHS 38

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield crossed the century mark with a 104-38 win over Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart in a Tomahawk Division boys basketball game on Monday.

Brecken Heiling led the Tigers with 25 points and seven rebounds with four steals, while Madden Lendt had 14 points and six rebounds. Parker Kuehn added 12 points and six rebounds with five steals.

No statistics were reported for BLHS.
