NEW ULM — The Martin Luther College Knights had a tough time knocking off — or more so shooting off — the holiday break rust Monday night as the Viterbo V-Hawks picked up a 71-60 win in a nonconference women’s basketball game.
The V-Hawks (5-9), who played at Saint Xavier (IL) on Saturday, lost that game but were able to get some game action in before Monday’s nonconference meeting with the Knights (7-6), who played their first game since Dec. 17, 2025, when they fell to Lakeland University at home.
The V-Hawks outshot the Knights 45.2% to 30.2% on Monday, getting a hot start in the first quarter by outshooting the Knights 56.3% to 23.5%.
Mya Morris led the Knights with 17 points and four assists, while Wilhelmina Wenz had 15 points and nine rebounds and Ava Stein had 9 points. Anna Kieselhorst returned from injury for the Knights, adding 7 points and four rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench.
The V-Hawks had four players in double figures, getting 23 points from Carly Drew to lead the way. Lauren Goettl, Nora Tucker and Pearla Teko-Folly each had 12 points, with Goettl adding 11 rebounds and Teko-Folly adding 10 rebounds and three blocks.

MLC outscored Viterbo in the second half 33-32, but the first half and slow start to the second quarter was too much of a hurdle for the Knights to get over.
After taking the first lead of the game on a Stein jumper, the Knights quickly fell behind after a 7-0 Viterbo run. A 3 by Lydia Feidt and a free throw by Wenz had the Knights down 7-6.
Viterbo got a quick 5-0 run back to lead 12-6, however, and carried a 20-12 lead into the second quarter.
An ugly start to the second quarter ensued for MLC as Viterbo went on a 13-0 run to lead 33-12. The Knights missed their first six shots of the second quarter during that Viterbo run, five of them coming from beyond the arc.
A 3 by Wenz ended Viterbo’s run and the Knights cut their deficit to 29-27 before the half on free throws from Ella Schmidt.
Viterbo pushed its lead to as much as 18 in the third quarter, but the Knights cut their deficit down to 52-40 late on a free throw by Feidt. Viterbo led 56-41 after three.
The fourth quarter saw the Knights make another push and cut their deficit to 9, 60-51, on a 3 from Wenz. The V-Hawks and Knights traded points after that until the V-Hawks got back-to-back buckets in the final two minutes and change to lead 71-58 with 59 seconds to play. Free throws by MLC’s Ella Walz put the final points on the board.
One positive for the Knights in the game was that they had fewer turnovers than Viterbo, committing just 13 to Viterbo’s 21. However, the Knights will need to look for a better night of shooting on Wednesday when they host the University of Minnesota Morris in their first Upper Midwest Athletic Conference game of the season.
The game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., with the men’s game following.
