Weekend area roundup: Wilfahrt grabs 1,000th rebound, Greyhounds win

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Cathedral 49, Loyola 38

NEW ULM — Behind Shay Wilfahrt’s history-making game on the glass, New Ulm Cathedral downed Mankato Loyola 49-38 on Saturday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference crossover girls basketball game.

Wilfahrt led the Greyhounds in the win with 17 points but she also had 11 rebounds, making her just the second player in Cathedral High School history to reach 1,000 rebounds for their career, joining the school’s leader Steph Klavitter.

Jayde Altermatt had a strong game for the Greyhounds also with 17 points, including hitting on three 3-pointers. Ashlyn Hillesheim added 8 points for Cathedral.

Amelia Speckel led Loyola with 17 points, while Ava Evanson had 14 points.

Cathedral (2-7, 2-4) is at Cedar Mountain on Tuesday.

Sleepy Eye 56,

Lester Prairie 17

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye rolled by Lester Prairie on Saturday with a 56-17 win in a Tomahawk Division girls basketball game.

Taylor Berkner led the way for Sleepy Eye in the win with 21 points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists, while Alexis Hoffman had 12 points and seven rebounds and Jaelynn Schauman had 10 points, five rebounds and seven steals. Also for Sleepy Eye, Destiney Dittbenner had 6 points, five rebounds and five steals, while Jace Schauman had 5 points, 11 rrebounds, four steals and three assists.

Sleepy Eye moved to 7-5 overall and 3-3 in the Tomahawk with the win.

BOYS BASKETBALL

New Ulm 81, Hutchinson 73

HUTCHINSON — New Ulm got a pair of 20-plus point games from the Hopp brothers on Saturday to down Hutchinson 81-73 in a nonconference boys basketball game.

Mitchell Hopp led the way for the Eagles with 24 points, while Levi Hopp had 21 points. Owen Castleman added 16 points for New Ulm, while Jayden Broste had 10 points.

New Ulm (5-4) is at Jackson County Central on Thursday.

Sleepy Eye 75,

Lester Prairie 66

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye held off Lester Prairie 75-66 on Saturday afternoon in a Tomahawk Division boys basketball game.

Robert Romberg led the way for Sleepy Eye with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Brayden Heiderscheidt had 18 points, five rebounds and four assists and Braylon Nelson had 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Also for Sleepy Eye, Eric Lozano had 10 points, five rebounds and three assists and RIley Voigt had 9 points and three assists.

Sleepy Eye (8-1, 4-1) hosts Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in a Tomahawk Division game on Tuesday night.

JWP 93, Springfield 80

JANESVILLE — The Springfield Tigers fell to Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 93-80 on Saturday in a nonconference boys basketball game.

JWP outshot the Tigers from the floor 57.9% to 48.6%. JWP also hit on 10 of 22 3s (45.5%) to the Tigers’ 4-of-23 shooting from beyond the arc (17.4%). JWP was 17 for 17 at the foul line, while Springfield made 4 of 6 from the foul line.

Parker Kuehn led the Tigers with 24 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Brecken Heiling had 17 points and six rebounds and Dylan Simonson had 13 points and four rebounds. Madden Lendt and Aiden Moriarty both had 11 points and nine rebounds apiece for the Tigers, with Lendt adding four assists.

Springfield fell to 4-3 overall on the season with the loss.

PREP WRESTLING

NUA wins

Tom Keating Invitational

FOLEY — The New Ulm Area wrestling team were the team point champions at Saturday’s Tom Keating Invitational with 612.5, ahead of second-place St. Michael-Albertville (458.5).

There were 15 total teams competing at the invite.

Finishing as their bracket’s champions for NUA were Chase Wilson (107), Regan Johnson (114) and Alex Portner (127).

Wilson had a bye, tech fall and pin on the day, defeating Foley’s Eli Molitor in the finals by fall in 1:25. Regan Johnson had a tech fall and two pins on the day, pinning Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg’s Oswaldo Moreno in 5:18. Portner was 4-0 with four tech falls on the day, getting a 17-2 tech fall in 5:51 over Annandale/Maple Lake’s Brayden Fobbe to win the 127-pound bracket.

Chael Johnson took third at 114 for NUA also, while Cohen Kiecker and Brayden Miller had strong showings at 121 pounds and finished second and third, respectively. Also for NUA, Kane Johnson took second at 133, while Elijah Rieser took third at 145, Candon Briggs took third at 160, Lane Ruch took third at 189 and Emerson Johnson took third at heavyweight.

On the girls side of the invite, Ellie Dake stayed undefeated on the season for NUA with a first-place finish in the girls 170-pound bracket, while Anna Pollard took third in the girls 124-pound bracket and Karli Horner took third in the girls 136-pound bracket.

PREP GYMNASTICS

New Ulm takes 8th

at Hornet Classic

BIG LAKE — The New Ulm gymnastics team made the trek north to Big Lake on Saturday, finishing eighth out of 10 teams at the Hornet Classic.

Sophia Berger led New Ulm all-around with a 24th-place finish (31.2). Berger, Karli Schwab and Matilda Klawitter all led New Ulm in the vault with 8.4s, which tied for 28th.

Leading New Ulm on bars was Aubrey Romsdahl, who had a 7.75 to take 31st. Romsdahl also led New Ulm on the beam with an 8, good enough to tie for 21st. On floor to lead New Ulm was Berger, who had an 8.85 to take 15th.

BOYS HOCKEY

Dodge County 3, New Ulm 0

KASSON — New Ulm was shut out 3-0 by Dodge County on Saturday in a nonconference boys hockey game.

Eagles goalie Blaine Arneson had 35 saves as New Ulm was outshot 38-27 in the game.

New Ulm (5-5) hosts Waseca on Tuesday night.
