Greyhounds’ comeback falls short to Bulldogs

NEW ULM — The New Ulm Cathedral Greyhounds were unable to close the comeback on Tuesday night, losing 63-59 against Lester Prairie in a Tomahawk Division girls basketball game at Cathedral High School.
The Greyhounds were led by Shay Wilfahrt’s 22 points, while Jayde Altermatt followed with 13 points. Ashlyn Hillesheim also added 12.
With two minutes left in the game, Wilfahrt caused a steal leading to a fast-break layup, followed by an Altermatt layup to bring the score within 2, 61-59. In the final minute of the game, Cathedral tried to force turnovers and put the Bulldogs on the free-throw line with Lee scoring 2 more points to end the game 63-59.
The Bulldogs started the game of with back-to-back layups. Wilfahrt fired back with two layups of her own to tie it at 4-4. A Greyhounds jumper from Altermatt took the lead at 9-8. The two teams went back and fourth until Lester Prairie went on a 6-0 run to take back the lead 18-13 and cause a Cathedral timeout with six minutes to go in the half.
Two quick Greyhounds layups brought the game within a point, until a 3-pointer from Anah Lee, brought it back to a 4-point game. Both teams traded points until the half was ended by a Altermatt 3-pointer to bring the Greyhounds within 3 at 31-28.
Lester Prairie came into the second half with the same intensity going on a quick 7-0 run led by two layups from Lee causing a Cathedral timeout bringing the score to 44-34.
Coming out of the timeout a Kylie Berdan free throw started a Cathedral 8-2 run, followed by two layups and a 3-pointer to have the Greyhounds down 46-42.
The Cathedral run was stopped however, with three Lester Prairie 3-pointers in a row to strengthen their lead 55-42. Lester Prairie continued to expand their lead, until a Wilfahrt and-one layup brought the game within 12, 61-49, followed by a Cathedral timeout with 4:27 left to play.
Cathedral continued to battle back, with Wilfahrt scoring a layup to bring the score to 61-51. Wilfahrt made four free throws in the bonus with three minutes left in the game, causing a Lester Prairie timeout.
Cathedral (1-4, 1-1) travels to Sleepy Eye Saint Mary’s this Thursday. Lester Prairie (1-3, 1-2) travels to Springfield this Friday.
