NEW ULM — The New Ulm Cathedral Greyhounds battled Sleepy Eye on Friday night, earning a 51-46 victory in a Tomahawk Division girls basketball game at Cathedral High School.
Ashlyn Hillesheim and Jayde Altermatt both led the Greyhounds in the win with 12 points, while Thea Paszkiewicz followed with 11. Shay Wilfahrt also added 11 for Cathedral.
“You’re gonna make some, you’re gonna miss some,” Cathedral head coach Dave Wilfahrt said. “They just hung in there and played together as a team until the end.”
For Sleepy Eye, Jaelynn Schauman led the team with 16 points and six rebounds, while Taylor Berkner added 11 points and seven rebounds. Jace Schauman scored 9 points and had eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals, while Alexis Hoffman also added 9 points.
Sleepy Eye started the game scoring back-to-back layups for an early 4-0 lead. The teams traded points, and two buckets from Shay Wilfahrt and another Cathedral layup tied the game at 6-6. The teams continued to trade points until a Shay Wilfahrt jumper tied the game back up at 14-14.
Hillesheim had two layups, drawing a foul on the second for an and-one to put them up by four. 19-14. Jaelynn Schauman helped build momentum for the Indians with a 3-pointer and a layup to help them take the lead right before the first-half buzzer bringing the score to 23-21.
Cathedral didn’t let Sleepy Eye hold the lead for long coming out of the half going on a 18-7 run to bring it to 39-30, with Paszkiewicz scoring 9 during the run. Berkner brought the Indians back in it with a 3-pointer quickly followed by a jumper to bring the score within 2, 39-37. The teams traded points until a layup took the lead for Sleepy Eye at 44-43 with around six minutes left to play.
An Altermatt layup started a Greyhounds 4-0 run to take back the lead and put them up by 5. Two free throws late weren’t enough for the Indians, with 2 more Cathedral points from Margo Finstad locking in the win for the Greyhounds.
“You always want to take care of the ball a little more, limit your turnovers, make our bunnies,” coach Wilfahrt said. “We had a lot of bunnies that we could have put in, but we will work on that. We come into practice tomorrow and we will keep working at it.”
Cathedral (1-3,1-1) is set to play Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s at home next Tuesday. Sleepy Eye (2-3, 0-2) is set to host Lester Prairie next Tuesday.
