Area roundup: New Ulm boys throttle Windom Area

New Ulm 9, Waseca 0
WINDOM — The New Ulm boys hockey team cruised by Windom Area with a 9-0 win Thursday night in a Big South Conference crossover boys hockey game.
New Ulm outshot Windom Area 67-12 in the game, with New Ulm goalie Blaine Arneson getting the 12-save shutout.
Hunter Larson recorded a hat trick and two assists to lead New Ulm’s offense, while Carsten Haala and Jaxon Saenz each had two goals. Mason Buegler and Trevan Thordson each added a goal, while Carson Uecker had two assists and Kayden Klein, Brody Nordby and Josh Forstner each had a helper.
New Ulm (2-1) hosts Hutchinson on Saturday in a 2 p.m. nonconference game.
BOYS BASKETBALL
GFW 77, HLOF 51
WABASSO — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop had four players in double figures on Thursday as the Firebirds downed Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda in a nonconference boys basketball game at Wabasso High School.
Cole Jacobson led GFW with 21 points, while Luke Bastian and Kaden Rieke each had 16 points. Eric Herrera dropped in 13 points for the Firebirds.
GFW (1-0) travels tp Morgan to take on Cedar Mountain in a Tomahawk Division game Tuesday night.
Wabasso 92,
Lakeview 61
WABASSO — Drew Kemp posted a 31-point, 10-assist double-double on Thursday to lead the Wabasso Rabbits to a 92-61 rout over Lakeview in a nonconference boys basketball game.
Kemp also had five assists and three steals, while Brayden Guetter had 18 points and four assists. Caden Frericks had a double-double also for Wabasso with 12 points and 10 rebounds while adding five assists and four steals. Brooks Baune had 11 points, while Nolan Leopold chipped in 7 points and five assists.
Wabasso (2-0) hosts Springfield for a Tomahawk Division game on Tuesday night.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Nicollet 70, Madelia 22
NICOLLET — Nicollet cruised by Madelia 70-22 in a Valley Division girls basketball game on Thursday.
Jazmyn Goettlicher led the Raiders with 18 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Cheyenne Klockziem had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Zoie Rengstorf added 12 points for Nicollet.
Alicia Lugo led the Blackhawks with 7 pointsand four rebounds, while Grace Tatro had 4 points and five rebounds.
Nicollet (3-2, 2-0) plays at Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther on Tuesday, while Madelia (0-3) travels to Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Friday.
St. Mary’s 80, GFW 14
WINTHROP — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s rolled Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 80-14 in a Tomahawk Division girls basketball game on Thursday.
Morgan Mathiowetz led the Knights with 28 points, 11 steals, seven assists and four rebounds, while Olivia Schieffert had 12 points, seven assists, seven steals and four rebounds. Brynne Ibberson added 11 points.
Kelly Willegal led the Firebirds with 7 points.
St. Mary’s (5-0, 2-0) play at New Ulm Cathedral on Tuesday, while GFW (1-5, 0-2) hosts Cedar Mountain on Tuesday.

Cedar Mountain 65
MORGAN — Windom Area defeated Cedar Mountain 79-65 in a nonconference girls basketball game on Thursday.
Aubrey Steffl recorded 28 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for the Cougars, while Kendra Erickson had 19 points, 12 rebounds and six steals. Grace Hamre added 9 points and three rebounds.
Cedar Mountain (0-1) plays at Lester Prairie on Friday.
