NEW ULM — For the first gymnastics meet of the new season and a few challenges to go with it, New Ulm Eagles head coach Kortney Peterson couldn’t have asked for much more from her gymnasts by the end of the meet.

Dominating in every event, the Eagles soared to a 132.675-113.325 win over the St. Peter Saints on Thursday in a Big South Conference gymnastics meet at the New Ulm Recreation Center.

Led by Alaina Blomberg, the top gymnast at the meet with a 33.25 all-around score, the Eagles had at least four of the top five scores in every event.

The meet came with an early delay, however after judges were delayed from arrival for an hour. The Eagles were also without senior all-around leader Sophie Berger, who was out with an illness.

Delays and setbacks aside, the Eagles got off to a strong start in the vault and never looked back.

“I think we had a strong showing on vault, beam and floor,” Peterson said. “Our bars is definitely an area we need to seek some improvement on, but we did land and stick our routines. So, overall, it was a really good night and a good starting place.

“Being short senior all-arounder Sophie Berger made it a really big win to start off on a good note without her present. … Being a little frazzled by the way the event started, I was really happy and proud of our performances.”

Starting the Eagles out strong in the vault was Karli Schwab, who won the event with a score of 8.675.

New Ulm’s Matilda Klawitter turned in an 8.65 on vault to take second, while St. Peter’s Sophia Sampson took third (8.6), New Ulm’s Avarey Sellner finished fourth (8.55) and New Ulm’s Allison Hoxmeier took fifth (8.525).

“Senior Avarey Sellner had a very nice night on vault, beam and floor, and then we had a couple of really good, standout performances from Matilda Klawitter and Aubrey Romsdahl,” Peterson said. “Karli Schwab got her first varsity win on vault, so that was exciting.”

While bars may need some fine-tuning as the season progresses, New Ulm still dominated that event with three of the top scores coming from Blomberg (7.6), Romsdahl (7.5) and Hoxmeier (7.1). Avyn Myhra took fourth on bars (7.075), while Natalie Severson took fifth for New Ulm with a 7.05.

New Ulm continued to control the meet with the top three beam scores as Romsdahl took first in the event with an 8.7, Sellner took second (8.525) and Klawitter took third (8.35). Sampson finished fourth in the event, while Blomberg took fifth (8.2).

The Eagles shined in the floor routine, sweeping the top five scores in the event. They were led by Blomberg, who finished first with a 9.15, while Blomberg took second (8.975), Romsdahl took third (8.85) and Evelyn Helget took fourth (8.275) and Klawitter took fifth (8.025).

In Berger’s absence, Blomberg stepped in to fill the all-around spot and Peterson was happy with what she saw from the senior. Blomberg finished just outside of the top five in the vault, but her 8.475 was good enough to finish sixth and impress Peterson.

“She previously has not competed varsity vault,” Peterson said. “She stepped in and did that and it’s a brand new vault, she learned it just a few days ago and was able to stick it and do well.”

Finishing behind Blomberg all-around was Sampson (31.625), Myhra (28.9), Sellner (26.225) and Romsdahl (25.05).

Peterson said she had an overall goal for her team to finish in the 130s for their first meet, which was a mission accomplished.

“My goal overall was to start at least in the 130 range,” Peterson said. “So scoring a 132 put us over expectations for a starting point. The goal by the end of the year is always to get to the mid to high 130sm so anything over that is a great starting place.”

New Ulm travels to K&G Gymnastics in Mankato for a varsity invite at 3 p.m. Saturday.
