NEW ULM — The New Ulm Cathedral Greyhounds struggled with turnovers in their first game of the new season Tuesday night and Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton capitalized in a big way.
The Bulldogs pulled away away late in the first half and didn’t slow down after that as they finished with a 55-27 win over the Greyhounds in nonconference girls basketball action at Cathedral High School.
The Greyhounds were happy to have senior Margo Finstad back on the court, who missed last season with an injury. She led the team with 10 points on the night, including two 3s in the second half. Ashlyn Hillesheim added 6 points for the Greyhounds, while Jayde Altermatt had 5.
JWP had three players in double figures, led by Katie Olson’s 16 points. Ashlynn Wolff added 13 points, while Nevaeh Weimert had 12 points.
Finstad dropped in the first bucket of the game and picked up an early steal that led to Shay Wilfahrt drawing a shooting foul and tacking on a point from the line for an early 3-0 Greyhounds lead. Kwynn Krause quickly erased that lead with a 3 to tie the game and bucket in the paint and 3 by Weimert had the Bulldogs up 8-3. A free throw from Wolff gave JWP a 9-3 lead before Altermatt cashed in on a 3 to have the Greyhounds down 9-6.

JWP started to pull away briefly with a 4-0 run to lead 17-8, but the Greyhounds got that run back with a bucket inside by Hillesheim and a basket from Finstad.
A 10-0 run by JWP followed, however, before Altermatt put a stop to it with a basket to have the Greyhounds down 27-14. JWP led 31-14 at the half.
Following a JWP bucket, Finstad had an early 3 before a long Cathedral drought followed. During Cathedral’s scoring drought, which lasted nearly nine minutes, the Bulldogs went on a 20-0 run to lead 53-17. The run was ended on a jumper from Hillesheim. Things went into running time moments later and several substitutions were made.
Cathedral (0-1) travels to Springfield for a Tomahawk Division matchup on Tuesday.
