MVL’s Matzke breaks own school record at SCC Championships

HENDERSON — Minnesota Valley Lutheran Chargers runner Natalie Matzke set a personal best and broke her own school record in the process Tuesday during the South Central Conference Cross-Country Championships at the Ney Nature Center.

Her second-place finish on the day helped the MVL girls cross-country team take second at the meet. MVL took third on the boys side of meet.

Matzke, who set the MVL girls school record in the 5,000-meter run on Sept. 9 when she ran 19:42.3 at Baylor Park, posted a time of 19:39.07 Tuesday in Henderson. In front of her Tuesday was Maple River’s Sophia Stencel, who finished with a top time of 18:47.2.

Also for the MVL girls, Faith Peters took seventh (21:44.97), while Grace Peters took 16th (23:59.97), Emily Brown took 22nd (25:24.21) and Rebekah Vlieger finished 23rd (25:25.30).

Le Sueur-Henderson won the girls side of the meet with 33 points, while MVL was second (57) Maple River took third (70) and Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial/Nicollet took fourth (71).

Sibley East didn’t have a complete girls team but was led by Paige Gardiner, who took third with a time of 19:54.33. Bridget Biron took ninth for Sibley East (22:06.32), while Claire Bauer took 12th (23:12.24).

Evie Jones led the LCWM/N girls with a fifth-place time of 20:58.41, while teammates Emma Kuehn took 18th (24:54.94) and Ellie Bergemann took 20th (25:11.87).

Sibley East won the boys meet with 38 points, while LSH took second (51), MVL took third (63), LCWM/N took foirth (96) and Maple River took fifth (131).

Sibley East’s Julio Alejandro won the boys race with a time of 16:56.24, while teammates Gage Horstman took second (17.13.97), Ellyott Allen took ninth (18:09.13) and Mausten Krueger took 10th (18:16.28).

The MVL boys were led by Jeremy Feistner, who took third with a time of 17:18.51, while teammate Titus Kohls ran a 17:38.94 to take sixth. The MVL boys rounded out the top 20 scores with Solomon Sotoering taking 17th (18:57.12), Tucker Kohls finishing 18th (19:05.19), Ezra Spike taking 19th (19:37.41) and Jamis Martens taking 20th (19:44.04).

LCWM/N was led by Charlie Gengler, who took fourth (17:25.56), while teammate Aidan Moeller took 14th (18:54.4).
