SPRINGFIELD — After a slow start to the first half of their game last week on the road against Sleepy Eye United, the Springfield Tigers had two key things in mind for their Week 7 home matchup with Russell-Tyler-Ruthton: get going early and spread the ball around.
The Tigers did that to a T on Thursday night.
After needing just four plays to find the end zone during their first drive of the night, quarterback Parker Kuehn finished the game with five touchdown passes to five separate receivers in a 49-0 win in a Mid-South District, Purple Subdistrict football game at Riverside Park.
Kuehn finished the night completing 16 of 28 passes for 260 yards. He did throw an interception in the game, but it was a pass that hit off the hands off one of his receivers and into the hands of Ayden Mason.
The Tigers were coming off a 28-22 overtime win over SEU in Week 6, a game the Tigers trailed 22-9 heading into the fourth quarter.

“It’s very important for us to come out fast,” Kuehn said. “We try to pile it on right away and then maybe we can lay back, but I think we did a good job of just firing early, taking shots and then we got what we wanted so that we could open up everything and get other guys open, which was really nice, We attacked early and it was nice.”
After forcing an RTR turnover on downs on the Knights’ opening the drive, Kuehn’s first pass of the night was an incompletion. Shrugging that off quickly, he found Kadyn Anderson for a 13-yard reception, while was followed by a 9-yard run from Paytin Johnson and a 19-yard throw to the end zone that Madden Lendt came down with for a touchdown. The PAT kick was good by Lendt, who connected on all seven his kicks in the game, to make it 7-0 with 7:27 to go in the first quarter.
After that TD grab, Aiden Moriarty, Isaac Fredin, Braxton Brown and Anderson each had a touchdown reception of their own as the Tigers ran away with the win.
“All our guys are weapons and every one of them has a unique skillset that they can use to go take advantage of a defense,” Kuehn said. “And I think each of them knows their job, each of them is very skilled in their job and they just work at that craft.”
The Tigers’ second drive ended with a 13-yard TD catch by Moriarty, set up in large part due to a big sideline grab of 27 yards by Brown to get the ball to the RTR 19.

Fredin followed that with a second-quarter TD catch of 5 yards to make it 21-0, and the Tigers defense got in on the fun midway through the second quarter as they forced a fumble which was scooped up by Ely Streich and taken 75 yards for a touchdown and 28-0 lead.
In the third quarter, Brown made another big grab up the middle on fourth down when he hauled in a wide-open pass for a 36-yard TD to make it 35-0 with 6:29 left in the third. Adiel Trevino ran the next Springfield touchdown in on a 7-yard run late in the third, while Anderson ended the scoring with a 15-yard TD catch with 11:55 left in the game.
Freshman Carter Jackson bulldozed and spun his way through the RTR defense in the waning minutes of the game for Springfield, helping the Tigers chew up the rest of the clock in running time. His final run of the game went 30 yards to the outside.
Lendt led all Tigers receivers with four catches for 94 yards.
Trevino led the Springfield defense with 10 tackles, while Moriarty had eight. Tyson Horkey and Johnson each added a sack for the Tigers’ defense, while Mikey Colvin and Cole Paplow each had half of a sack. Moriarty and Tayte Hall each forced a fumble, while Hall had an interception.
RTR lost for just the second time this year, falling to 5-2 on the season, while the Tigers moved to 7-0.
