NEW ULM — It was an uncharacteristic performance to say the least by the Martin Luther College Knights women’s soccer team on Friday.
Unable to record a single shot on goal, the Knights were swarmed by the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets on the way to a 6-0 shutout loss in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference game.
The Knights were averaging 14.6 shots on goal entering Friday evening’s contest with the Yellowjackets but struggled to push the ball past midfield, with the Yellowjackets dominating time of possession and firing 22 shots on goal.
The Yellowjackets had 33 shots total in the game, while the Knights’ lone shot off the foot of Rachel Schoeneck missed high and left of the net 12 minutes into the game.
While the Knights opened the season with back-to-back losses in nonconference play to Buena Vista and Wisconsin Lutheran College, they went 6-0-1 over their next seven games before a 3-1 UMAC loss to the University of Northwestern Eagles in Roseville on Sept. 27. Friday’s loss to the Yellowjackets gave the Knights a two-game skid for the second time this season as they fell to 6-5-1 overall and 3-3 in the UMAC.

The Yellowjackets, who moved to 4-4-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the UMAC, got on the board in the 11th minute on a goal from Brynne Crystal, assisted by Kamryn Hill. In the 27th minute, the Yellowjackets made it 2-0 on an unassisted goal by Emma Wright.
Things started to get out of hand for the Knights after tha. After Wright assisted on a goal by Kasja Kovala in the 34th minute, Lilly Klocker scored in the 38th minute and the 41st minute, the second goal on another assist by Wright, to make it a 5-0 game heading into the half.
While the Knights and goalie Maria Vik were able to minimize the damage in the second half, only allowing one goal on a penalty kick by Niamh Larson, the Yellowjackets still kept on their attack and kept the Knights from registering a shot on goal the rest of the way.
MLC hosts Bethany Lutheran College in UMAC action at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
