Area football roundup: Rabbits stay unbeaten, rout Raiders
Wabasso 52, Nicollet 14
WABASSO — The Wabasso Rabbits pushed their unbeaten streak to six games this season with a 52-14 rout of the Nicollet Raiders on Friday night in a Nine-Man South District, West Subdistrict football game.
Wabasso quarterback Drew Kemp completed 12 of 14 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. Nolan Leopold caught five passes for 60 yards, added a 28-yard run and had a 70-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, while Jack Burns had three catches for 46 yards and a TD and Zach Skoblik had a 14-yard TD reception.
The Rabbits got at least one carry on the ground from nine different players in the win, led by Paxton Huhnerkoch’s six carries for 61 yards and a TD. Brooks Baune added nine carries for 56 yards and a TD, while Sam Zeug had eight carries for 48 yards and two TDs and Zeke Olson had a 3-yard TD run.
For the Wabasso defense, Mason Kampsen led with 10 tackles and a half sack, while Tyson Lightfoot had nine tackles, Olson had eight tackles and two sacks, Burns and Leopold each had an interception and Joe Rohlik had a half sack.
Nicollet quarterback Henry Oscarson completed 26 of 36 passes for 199 yards and two interceptions. Talan Osborne finished with 11 carries for 53 yards and a TD and had nine catches for 51 yards. AJ Kramer caught nine passes for 54 yards, while Colton Rengstorf had four catches for 48 yards.
Osborne led Nicollet in tackles with 13.
Wabasso had 21 first downs to Nicollet’s 18 and had 422 total yards of offense to Nicollet’s 299.
Wabasso (6-0) travels to Lamberton next to take on fellow unbeaten Red Rock Central Friday night. Nicollet (1-5) hosts Adrian/Ellsworth at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Lester Prairie 24, GFW 22
LESTER PRAIRIE — The Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop Firebirds dropped a close one on the road Friday night to the Lester Prairie Bulldogs in a Mid-South District, Gold Sub-District football game.
Despite holding a 22-16 lead at halftime, the Bulldogs got a long touchdown run in the third and 2-point conversion to take the lead back in the third. Nobody could find the end zone from there out as the Bulldogs hung on.
Garrett Stegeman had eight carries for 141 yards and two TDs to lead GFW, while Cayson Gosewisch had 14 carries for 65 yards and Matthew Lee had seven carries for 26 yards and a score. Quarterback Owen Swenson completed 2 of 4 passes for 26 yards, one a 14-yarder to Lee and another a 12-yarder to Gosewisch.
Jose Oscar Farias Banda had six tackles and two sacks to lead the GFW defense, while Stegeman had seven tackles and a sack.
GFW had 293 total yards of offense to Lester Prairie’s 269 and both teams converted 13 first downs. While GFW was 2 for 8 on third down and Lester Prairie was 5 for 10, the Firebirds were 3 for 4 on fourth down and the Bulldogs were 0 for 3.
GFW (3-3) hosts Madelia on Thursday.
TCU 28, New Ulm 22
MONTGOMERY — The New Ulm Eagles fell to Tri-City United on the road Friday night in a Southeast Central District, Red Subdistrict football game.
The Eagles had the ball with under two minutes left on a first-and-goal at the TCU 5 but fumbled the ball away, allowing TCU to hang on.
The Eagles got a kickoff return for a TD from Zach Hubbard and TD throws from Owen Castleman to Jamison Portner and Hubbard.
New Ulm (2-4) hosts St. Peter on Friday night in its final home game of the regular season.
