MLC men struggle to manage Morris attack

NEW ULM — The Martin Luther College Knights couldn’t keep up with the pressure of the University of Minnesota Morris Cougars Tuesday afternoon as the Cougars put four on the board in both halves for an 8-0 win in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference men’s soccer game at the MLC Soccer Pitch.
The Cougars doubled the Knights’ total shots in the game, outshooting MLC 22-11 total and 13-4 in shots on goal. The Knights had two shots on goal in each half, their first coming in the 39th minute on a low kick by Jonah Uhlenbrauck that was handles by UMM goalie Nick Isensee. The Knights got another late shot on goal in the first half on another low kick, this time by Caleb Pausma.
The Knights started the second half with some pressure, getting three early shots at the net. All three shots were missed wide or high of the net, however, until a fourth shot, one on goal by Joshua Krenke, was on line but stopped by Isensee. Pausma had his second shot on goal in the 64th minute, once again stopped.
The Cougars had a quick 1-0 lead in the opening minute when Whitaker Root got a pass to Guillaume Hensgens, who put it in the back of the net. In the seventh minute, Jake Anargyros assisted a goal by Aaron Mackall for a 2-0 UMM lead. In the 21st minute, Isensee got in on the offense with a big assist when he booted the ball down the pitch to Mackall, who picked it up and zipped it over the head of Knights goalie Joshua Kallies for a 3-0 lead.
Root got his second goal of the game in the 32nd minute for a 4-0 UMM lead.

Mackall completed a hat trick in the 55th minute for a 5-0 Cougars lead and added to his total in the 61st minute with a goal on an assist from Anargyros. Anargyros got a goal of his own in the 71st minute for a 7-0 UMM lead and a low penalty kick by Brett Bartkowicz got by a diving Kallies into the left side of the net for the final score in the 80th minute.
The Knights (0-7-1, 0-3 UMAC) travel to St. Paul to take on Northwestern in another UMAC game at 2 p.m. Saturday, while UMM (3-4-1, 1-1) are at UW-Superior for UMAC action at 2 p.m. Saturday.
