NEW ULM — Eli Schauland’s attempted 2-point conversion pass in overtime fell incomplete as the Windom Area Eagles came away with a 22-20 win over Minnesota Valley Lutheran Saturday in a Mid-South District, Brown Subdistrict game at Johnson Field Saturday afternoon.
Windom had scored a touchdown in their first overtime possession on a Steven Meyer 1-yard run and then added the eventual game-winning 2-point conversion on a pass from quarterback Jackson Joyce to Joseph Walinga.
Schauland then pulled the Chargers to within 2 points on a 5-yard scoring pass to Blake Sexton.
Pierson Brau scored a touchdown on a 30-yard pass from Schauland, with Eric Sorenson returning a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown.
“Our guys did not give up,” Chargers head coach Jim Buboltz said. “I thought that our first drive of the second half was the one that we should have capitalized on — we had a couple of costly penalties there (two false starts) that did not give us an opportunity to score.”

The Chargers, who play at Jackson County Central next Friday, grabbed the lead late in the first quarter when Schauland hooked up with Brau on a crossing pattern from 30 yards out for a touchdown. Micah Horak’s kick made it 7-0.
Windom knotted the game at 7-7 using an 11 play, 80-yard drive ending on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Joyce to Hayden Tietz. Meyer’s kick tied the game.
The Eagles then took a 14-7 lead late in the first half on a 15-yard Meyer run.
But the lead did not last long as Sorenson ran back the ensuing kickoff 75 yards to tie the game as time ran out in the first half.
The game remained tied until overtime.
Buboltz said that the one score on offense was a concern.
“But it was a defensive game from both defenses,” he said. “They wore us down a little bit at the end.”
Buboltz said that the loss was a tough one to take.
“But I feel better about playing in tight game like this all the way to the end of the season,” he said. “I was pretty happy with our guys.”
