Area roundup: Chargers battle back to topple Giants

MVL 3, LSH 2

LE SUEUR — Minnesota Valley Lutheran lost the first two sets 25-20 and 25-18, but came back to win the next three sets 25-22, 26-24 and 15-6 in a South Central Conference volleyball match against Le Sueur-Henderson on Thursday.

Jenna Bates led the Chargers with 14 kills, 23 digs and three aces, while Olivia Hammer had 15 kills, 10 digs and an ace. Marley Schauer had four kills, six digs and two blocks, while Ellie Kaesermann had four kills, four digs and a block. Graysie Black added 35 set assists, 17 digs, two kills and a block, and Jessica Meunier had 14 digs.

MVL (6-5, 2-1) hosts Sibley East on Tuesday.

Cathedral 3, Lester Prairie 2

LESTER PRAIRIE — New Ulm Cathedral held off the Lester Prairie Bulldogs in five sets of a Tomahawk Division volleyball match Thursday, winning 19-25, 25-17, 25-22, 24-26, 15-10.

Shay Wilfahrt led the Greyhounds with 20 kills, 20 digs and three blocks, while Ava Krueger had 20 kills and 22 digs. Margo Finstad added 15 set assists, five kills, four aces and 12 digs, while Abbey Hillesheim had 20 assists, 10 digs and three aces and Ashlyn Hillesheim had 17 digs and two aces.

Cathedral (6-5, 3-0) is at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Thursday night for another Tomahawk matchup.

St. Mary’s 3, Springfield 0

SPRINGFIELD — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s swept Springfield 25-18, 25-15, 25-18 in a Tomahawk Division volleyball match on Thursday.

Morgan Mathiowetz led the Knights with 22 kills, while Reese Hoffmann had 11 kills. Josie Helget had 36 set assists, and Natalie Fischer had 20 digs.

Lily Pingeon had four kills and two blocks for Springfield, while Kendall Krueger had three kills and 17 digs. Olivia Simonson had three kills, four digs and two blocks, and Taylor Roiger had seven set assists and three digs.

St. Mary’s (8-3, 2-1) hosts Lester Prairie on Tuesday, while Springfield (0-5, 0-3) plays in the Wabasso invitational on Saturday.

Wabasso 3, GFW 0

WABASSO — Wabasso swept GFW 25-13, 25-19, 25-6 in a Tomahawk Division volleyball match on Thursday.

Carly Fenger had 10 kills for Wabasso, while Camryn Irlbeck had eight kills. Audrey Johnson had 10 digs and two aces, and Sara Carlson had 30 set assists and two aces. Kenley Guetter had three aces and a block, and Leah Mathiowetz had three aces, six kills, eight digs and a block.

Ella Nachreiner had five kills and three blocks for GFW, while Kora Schwarzrock had four kills and eight digs. Natalie Ahlbrecht had 10 set assists for the Firebirds.

Wabasso (3-3, 1-2) hosts an invitational on Saturday, while GFW (0-5, 0-2) hosts Cedar Mountain on Tuesday.

BLHS 3, Sleepy Eye 0

HECTOR — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart swept Sleepy Eye 25-8, 25-19, 25-23 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Division volleyball match.

Sleepy Eye was led by Sam Price’s 15 kills and two blocks, while Jaelynn Schauman had five kills, nine digs and four blocks, Hannah Meyer had 12 set assists and Ava Kunkel had eight assists, five digs and two aces.

No statistics were reported for BLHS by the time this edition of The Journal went to press.

BLHS (15-0, 3-0) hosts Cedar Mountain in Tomahawk action Thursday, while Sleepy Eye (2-7, 1-8) is at Red Rock Central for nonconference action on Monday night.

Madelia 3, GHEC/T/ML 2

TRUMAN — Madelia downed Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther 27-25, 25-19, 13-25, 25-19, 15-11 in a Valley Division volleyball match on Thursday.

Makayla Sorenson had nine kills and 12 digs for the Blackhawks, while Carissa Sorenson had eight kills, four digs, five blocks and two aces. Lauryn Grev had six kills, 10 digs and three aces, while Alicia Lugo had 21 set assists, 22 digs, four kills and four aces. Emmy Johnson added 21 digs and an ace.

Madelia (5-6, 2-0) hosts Alden-Conger on Tuesday.

St. Clair 3, Sibley East 0

ARLINGTON — St. Clair swept Sibley East on Thursday in a South Central Conference volleyball match 25-20, 25-21, 25-17.

Addy Odenthal had seven kills and two aces for Sibley East, while Emme Eccles had seven kills and nine digs and Maelynn Thoele had six kills. Kennedy Hahn had 12 set assists and seven digs for Sibley East, while Michelle Meyer had six digs and Anna Colling seven assists.

Sibley East (1-4, 0-3) is at Minnesota Valley Lutheran for a conference match on Tuesday night.

GIRLS TENNIS

Belle Plaine 6, New Ulm 1

BELLE PLAINE — Belle Plaine defeated New Ulm 6-1 in a girls tennis meet on Thursday.

New Ulm’s lone victory came at No. 3 singles when Lilly Kral defeated Cora Rosenwinkel 6-1, 6-0.

New Ulm hosts Fairmont on Monday.
