Hanska falls to Braves in 12-inning semifinals battle
BROWNTON — Despite some late-game heroics by Tanner Olson tying things up Sunday, the Hanska Lakers came up just short in the end as the Le Sueur Braves finished the game in the 12th with a 5-4 win in the Class C Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament semifinals.
The Braves ended up moving on to Sunday’s championship game with the win over Hanska and took on the Pierz Lakers. Pierz finished the title game with Le Sueur early after seven innings due to the 10-run lead rule, winning 11-1 win.
A dominant start against Hanska from St. Peter draftee Andy Regner helped the Braves keep a 3-0 lead heading into the eighth inning. But Regner walked Derek Wilfahrt and hit Chris Knowles with a pitch to start the bottom of the eighth, ending Regner’s day as Ethan Hoffman took the mound in relief. Olson took just one pitch for a ball before connecting on the next one on a three-run homer to right field at Barney Tadsen Field to tie the game up.
The teams traded a run in the 10th, Le Sueur getting its first extra-inning run on an RBI single from Mitch Casperson and Hanska getting the run back on an RBI groundout by Sam Knowles. But in the top of the 12th, the Braves broke through with two on and two outs when Burke Nesbit singled in Bryce Novak, who led off the inning with a single.
A 1-2-3 bottom of the 12th pitched by reliever Logan Feeney ended Hanska’s 13-game win streak and season.
The Hanska Lakers were the second Region 2C team to fall to the Braves in the state tournament as the Braves eliminated Leavenworth two weekends ago with a 1-0 win.
Cole Pengilly led the Braves bats against Hanska by going 3 for 4, while Nesbit was 3 for 6 with two RBIs. Regner went seven innings in the no decision, allowing two hits and two walks for two earned runs while striking out five.
Feeney got the win in relief, pitching two innings and allowing two hits and a walk for no runs while striking out four.
Olson finished the day 3 for 4 at the plate, while Chris Knowles added a double. Mitchell Bouwman, a draftee from Marshall, got the start for Hanska and went six innings, allowing seven hits and a walk for three earned runs while striking out three. Dominic Rose, a draftee from Gibbon, pitched the last six innings for Hanska and took the loss, allowing five hits and three walks for two runs, one earned, while striking out five.
Le Sueur got its first three runs in the top of the sixth, the first coming on an RBI single from Casperson. Novak scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 advantage and a ground-ball RBI single by Nesbit made it 3-0 moments later.
Olson got Hanska’s first hit of the game in the sixth on a two-out single before Brady Mosenden singled right after. Jake Finstad was hit by a pitch to fill the bases, but Regner got Sam Knowles swinging to end the threat.
