Lakers advance to state semifinals

BROWNTON — The Hanska Lakers continued their hot postseason run Saturday with their 13th consecutive win as they downed the Farming Flames 13-9 on Saturday in the Class C Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament.

The Lakers will play a state semifinals game at 1 p.m. Sunday in Brownton. The winner of that game will play for the Class C state title at 7 p.m. in Brownton on Sunday.

Hanska was led by Kevin Larson, who was 3 for 4 with an RBI, while Chris Knowles was 2 for 3 with a triple, a double and three RBIs. Jake Finstad was 2 for 5 also for the Hanska bats.

Aaron Portner got the win in 6 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and three walks for six earned runs while striking out two over 97 pitches.

Farming was led by Isaac Nett, who was 2 for 3, while Cameron Miller was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, Adam Winkels was 2 for 5 with two RBIs and Ethan Navratil was 2 for 5 with an RBI. New Munich SilverStreaks draftee Ty Reller got the start and took the loss on the mound, going 4 2/3 innings and allowing eight hits and four walks for eight runs, five earned, while striking out nine.

The Lakers had a little early help from Reller and the Flames in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead, scoring on a passed ball, a balk and an error. But after the Flames came back to tie it in the top of the fourth inning, the Lakers took matters into their own hands by getting three back in the bottom of the fourth and four more in the fifth for a 10-3 lead.

The Flames chipped away at the Lakers’ lead with three runs in the seventh and three in the ninth with reliever Connor Jones, a St. James draftee, on the mound, but the Lakers’ big lead was too much to overcome in the end. Jones finished the game with 2 2/3 innings of work, allowing five hits and a walk for three earned runs.

After the Flames tied it in the fourth, Hanska responded in the bottom of the inning with two outs. A two-out single by Larson as followed with a walk to Derek Wilfahrt before Knowles tripled in both runs and came home on a throwing error.

In the bottom of the fifth, Hanska got a leadoff single by Finstad, but back-to-back strikeouts left Brock Wellmann with a high-stakes at-bat. After Finstad swiped second, Wellmann singled him in for a 7-3 Hanska lead. A walk to Larson and Wilfahrt loaded the bases for Knowles, who took a walk of his own to make it an 8-3 game. Tanner Olson then singled in another pair of runs for a 10-3 lead.

After the Flames got three runs back in the seventh, the Lakers were again quick to answer in the bottom of the inning with two runs coming home on passed balls. Hanska got one more run in the eighth on a sac fly from Larson

The Flames scored three runs in the ninth, led by Drew Cramlet’s RBI double, but a flyout to center field ended the game.

Starting at $4.50/week.
