Brewers win again in extra innings, on to semifinals
BROWNTON — It was another extra-inning affair for the New Ulm Brewers on Saturday night.
And another win.
This time it didn’t take the Brewers 18 innings to get the win, but it did take them one extra frame as they won a pitchers’ duel against the Foley Lumberjacks 1-0 in a Class B Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament quarterfinals game.
The win moves the Brewers on to a 4 p.m. Sunday state semifinals game against Nisswa in Hutchinson.
Ethan Stade pitched nine shutout innings for the Brewers, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out 17. Stade threw 139 pitches in the no decision with 89 strikes. Mitch Bockenstedt got the win in relief for New Ulm, pitching a 1-2-3 10th inning with two strikeouts.
Logan Winkelman pitched a gem of his own in the no decision for Foley, allowing five hits and two walks in eight innings of shutout ball while striking out 17. Trey Emmerich took the loss in two innings of relief, allowing one hit and one walk for one earned run while striking out five.
One week removed from the night Trevor Nissen homered to give the Brewers a 3-2 win over Princeton in the 18th inning, the Brewers had a little extra to work to do again on Sunday in the quarterfinals.
In the bottom of the ninth, Foley had a chance to win it with Lukas Olson on second after an error and two outs. After a walk to Charles Hackett had two on, a liner into left field by Noah Winkelman was scooped up by left fielder Cole Ranweiler, who fired the throw home to catcher Ayden Jensen. Jensen then got the tag on a head-first sliding Noah Winkelman just in time for the third out.
Then the Brewers got their chance in the top of the 10th off Emmerich. Lucas Suess led off the 10th with a walk before Sam Keckeisen was hit by a pitch. J.T. Hoffmann bunted and reached safely to fill the bases for Ranweiler, whose sac fly to right scored Suess to give New Ulm the only run it ended up needing.
Hoffmann finished 2 for 5 for the Brewers at the plate. The Lumberjacks were led at the plate by Noah Winkelmann, who was 3 for 4.
