MORGAN — Cedar Mountain opened the season by defeating Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 25-21, 23-25, 25-14, 26-24 on Monday in a nonconference volleyball match.

Kendra Erickson played an all-around strong match for the Cougars in the win, finishing with 20 kills, 15 set assists and 11 digs. Aubrey Steffl also had a nice night with 13 kills and 11 digs, while Brynn Hoffbeck had 20 digs and Kendal Atkins added 11 digs. Reagyn Kleinschmidt had 21 set assists, 11 kills and 10 digs also for the Cougars, while Evy Heibel added six kills.

Cedar Mountain hosts Madelia at 7:15 p.m. Thursday.

GIRLS TENNIS

Hutchinson 5, New Ulm 2

NEW ULM — New Ulm fell to Hutchinson 5-2 on Monday in a nonconference girls tennis meet.

New Ulm earned two wins in singles action on the day from Carmen Schotzko and Lillian Kral.

Schotzko defeated Cate Oberg 7-2, 7-6 (3) at No. 2 singles, while Kral defeated Olivia Mach 7-6 (3), 6-3 at No. 3 singles.

New Ulm’s No. 1 singles player Natalie Fischer came up just short in her match against Sydney Loe as Loe won 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

New Ulm hosts Tri-City United at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

BOYS SOCCER

New Ulm 2, Jordan 1

JORDAN — New Ulm topped Jordan 2-1 on Saturday in a nonconference boys soccer game.

Jackson Ocampo had New Ulm’s first goal unassisted before Jordan tied it a minute later with a penalty kick. Logan Goblirsch scored the final goal with an assist from Methodius Amoah in the second half.

Austin Krohn had seven saves in net for New Ulm.

GIRLS SOCCER

New Ulm 5, Jordan 0

JORDAN — New Ulm shut out the Jordan Jaguars 5-0 on Saturday in a nonconference girls soccer game.

Jesalyn Skoglund had a goal in each period for New Ulm, while Amelia Hinkle, Marlena Kral and Morgan Zimanski each had a goal. Grace Berry assisted on New Ulm’s first three goals.

Ellie Dake was in net for New Ulm and had five saves.

New Ulm hosts Fairmont on Tuesday.

MANKATO — Mankato Loyola hosted the first Tomahawk-Valley Conference cross-country meet of the new season this past Friday, with the Minnesota Valley Lutheran boys and Mankato Loyola/Cleveland girls taking first in their respective races.

The MVL boys were led by Wyatt Lien, who took fourth with a time of 18:27.7, while Jeremy Feistner (18:45.8) and Titus Kohls (18:45.9) came in sixth and seventh, respectively. Loyola senior Soren Kelly won the boys race with a time of 16:29.4. Wabasso saw Andrew Morin take second in the boys race (17:37.1), while Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s/Sleepy Eye/New Ulm Cathedral had Raul Rodriguez take fifth (18:30.7) and Max Fischer take 10th (18:57.1).

The MVL girls were led by Natalie Matzke, who took third with a time of 20:56.1, while Wabasso’s Elsie Leopolod took fourth (21.41.3), St. Mary’s/Sleepy Eye/NUC’s Emma Hagen took ninth (22:30) and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop’s Lucy Dvorak took 10th (22:49.1). The girls race was won by Loyola/Cleveland freshman Charlotte Meyer, who ran it in 19:14.5.

BLHS wins tournament

HOWARD LAKE — The Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart Mustangs won the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Volleyball Invite on Friday with pool plays wins over West Central Area (2-1), Kimball (2-0) and tournament wins over Annandale (2-1) and Central Minnesota Christian (2-0).

Lily Hubin racked up 36 kills, 36 digs, 40 assists and four aces during the tournament, while Elizabeth Ovitt had 41 assists, 14 digs, four aces and 10 kills. Lauren Hubin and Chloe Schultz each had 21 kills in the tourney for BLHS also, while Schultz added eight solo blocks and four aces and Lauren Hubin added five aces. Kelsey Ulrich led the Mustangs in digs for the tourney with 48, while Lauren Hubin added 29 and Callie Hable had 17.
