BROWNTON — The Pierz Lakers stunned the Courtland Cubs early on Sunday by scoring eight runs in the second inning of a Class C Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament second-round game.
That was more than the Lakers needed in the end as they finished the game with a 9-0 win at Barney Tadsen Field to end the No. 1 Courtland Cubs’ season.
The Cubs were ranked No. 1 all season long in the MBA rankings, giving Pierz extra bragging rights after its 9-0 rout of Courtland Sunday.
Jackson Bode took the loss for the Cubs, getting bumped from the mound in the second inning after issuing a bases-loaded walk to David Kroger and a two-run double to Kamden Happke to trail 3-0. Bode finished with one complete inning pitched, allowing three hits and three walks for five earned runs.
Ansen Dulas took over for Bode in relief and allowed six hits and three walks for four runs, three earned, while striking out four in six innings. Searles draftee Mark Schommer pitched the eighth for Courtland, allowing no hits or walks while striking out one.
Ryan Chmielewski got the mound win for Pierz in seven innings, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out three. Noah Cekalla pitched two innings in relief, allowing one walk while striking out three.
After Bode moved to shortstop, the Lakers greeted Dulas with another two-run double, this time off the bat of Kolten Happke, for a 5-0 lead. Chase Becker dropped down a sac bunt to make it a 6-0 game. Chmielewski kept the inning going with the third double of the inning before an error allowed Cekalla to reach first and have two on for Preston Rocheleau, who singled in Chmielewski for a 7-0 lead. Carter Petron singled for an 8-0 Lakers lead.
Pierz got its ninth run in the sixth when Cekalla had a ground-ball single to score Becker, who led off the inning with a walk and was bunted to second by Chmielewski.
Despite a tough day on the mound, Bode did what he could to make up for it with his bat as he led the Cubs at the plate by going 2 for 4 with a double. The Cubs’ third hit came on a leadoff single by Carter Lang in the seventh.
Kamden Happke led the Pierz bats, going 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, while Petron was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Pierz will play in the quarterfinals Saturday in Hutchinson against the winner of the Howard Lake-Windom game.
