Area roundup: Knights open season with sweep of MLA/C

COMFREY — The Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Knights volleyball team opened their 2025 season with a win on Thursday night, sweeping the Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey Wolverines 25-18, 25-22, 25-18.

Josie Helget led the Knights with 31 set assists, while Kailey Nelson led the team in kills with 10. Morgan Mathiowetz had eight kills and 24 digs also for the Knights, while Reese Hoffmann had five kills, nine digs and three aces.

St. Mary’s (1-0) hosts Minnesota Valley Lutheran at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in a nonconference match.

Cleveland 3, Cathedral 1

NEW ULM — Despite winning a tough opening set, New Ulm Cathedral fell to Cleveland in the end on Thursday in a Tomahawk-Valley Conference crossover volleyball match 23-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-17.

The Greyhounds were led by Shay Wilfahrt, who had 18 kills, 16 digs and three blocks, while Abbey Hillesheim had 21 set assists, 11 digs and two ace serves. Ashlyn Hillesheim added 22 digs for Cathedral.

Cathedral (0-1) hosts Madelia in another Tomahawk-Valley Conference crossover match at 7 p.m. Friday.

Sleepy Eye 2

GRANADA — Sleepy Eye dropped a five-set Tomahawk-Valley Conference crossover battle to Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther on Thursday night as the Jaguars won 25-22, 22-25, 25-10, 14-25, 16-14.

Sam Price led the way for Sleepy Eye with 18 kills, 11 digs, three blocks and two aces, while Callie Evers added six kills and Ava Kunkel had 10 set assists, 15 digs and four aces. Hannah Meyer added 13 set assists and 10 digs for Sleepy Eye, while Jaelynn Schauman had three kills, 11 digs, four blocks and three aces and Macy Martinez added 10 digs and two aces.

Sleepy Eye (0-1) is at Mankato Loyola for another Tomahawk-Valley Conference crossover match on Tuesday night.
