GAYLORD — Just like his last start when the Leavenworth Orioles punched their state ticket, right-handed pitcher Mark Anderson kept opposing hitters from touching home plate on Saturday.
With 6 1/3 innings of shutout pitching by Anderson in a first-round Class C Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament game against the Randall Cubs, the Orioles earned an 11-0 win at Walsh Field in eight innings.
The game ended after eight innings due to the 10-run lead rule.
The win moves Leavenworth on to a 6:30 p.m. second-round game against the Le Sueur Braves in Brownton on Saturday, Aug. 23. The Braves defeated the Urbank Bombers 2-0 on Saturday.
Anderson finished his win over the Cubs by throwing 114 pitches, 74 for strikes. He allowed six hits and one walk while striking out five.

Anderson’s previous mound win saw him throw seven shutout innings without allowing a hit against the Milroy Yankees in the Region 2C tournament in Sleepy Eye, which clinched the Orioles’ state berth. And much like in that game, an 8-1 win, Anderson didn’t need much help from his offense in Gaylord on Saturday.
But, again, he got it anyway.
His offensive backing Saturday started with four runs in the second inning when Jackson Ludewig led off with a line-drive single. Dylan Hillesheim then dropped down a bunt that not only ended up moving Ludewig to second but also let Hillesheim reach first safely. Another bunt, this time by Alex Sellner, moved both runners up and an error by the catcher allowed Sellner to reach safely also to load the bases.
Sam Pidde reached on a fielder’s choice that got Ludewig out at home, and a strikeout gave Jevan Richert a chance to drive in some runs with two outs, which he did with a bases-clearing double for a 3-0 lead. Jackon Huiras then doubled in Richert for a 4-0 Orioles lead.
While the Cubs loaded the bases on Anderson in the sixth after a one-out hit by pitch put Brett Strack on, Anderson got a strikeout and forced a groundout to first baseman Jaden Mickelson to end the inning.
The Orioles put seven runs on the board in the eighth, led by a two-RBI single from Pidde, an RBI double from Richert and an RBI single from Evers. There were also two errors bringing in a run each in the inning.
Granite Falls draftee Bennett Knapper pitched the final 1 2/3 innings in relief for the Orioles, allowing no hits or walks while striking out three.
Nathan Benning got the start for the Cubs and pitched six innings, allowing six hits and two walks for four runs, no earned, while striking out four. St. Mathias draftee Bryce Flanagan pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief for the Cubs and allowed three hits and a walk for six runs, two earned, while striking out three. Royalton draftee Marcus Hayes pitched got the last out in the eighth for the Cubs after allowing one hit and one unearned run.
The Leavenworth bats were led by Richert, who was 3 for 4 with two doubles and four RBIs, while Pidde was 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
Brett Strack was 2 for 2 to lead the Randall bats.
